   So many parents blame teachers for their children's lack of academic progress but aren't parents their children's first and primary educators?  Children who succeed academically and thrive intellectually had parents who educated and taught them at home.  They exposed their children to all sorts of academic and intellectual paraphernalia in the home.  They also did intensive teaching, teaching their children subjects beyond that of the classroom.  They furthermore had intellectual discussions with their children to stimulate their academic and intellectual interests. They believed in and even loved education.  However, many parents believe that it is solely teachers' fault that their children are either failing or not progressing in school. They believe that it is NOT their job to teach or educate their children, it is THE TEACHER'S job to do this.  Discuss.

      It is no longer the parent's job.  As neither parent is home long enough to take on the task, it falls to society to do it for them.

         Wilderness, that is sad really.  Both my parents worked and they taught me.  We had long discussions together.  It is all about priorities.  These parents work yet they find time to watch inane television programs and/or hang out w/friends after work.    However, even if there are extenuating circumstances such as working two jobs, there IS still time to teach and educate their children.  After all, it is THEIR children, not the teacher's and if they CAN'T teach, THEN they SHOULDN'T have had children in the first place.

            Toys are generally more important than children today and that requires additional work time.  It's also more important to play "soccer mom" and spend the time engaging the kids in socially expected entertainment programs (with mom or dad sitting on the sidelines building their social standing) than learning and then teaching scholastics.
            
            *shrug*  So the kids "graduate" functionally illiterate and unable to do simple arithmetic.  Without a shred of understanding of geology, chemistry, physics, biology or any other science.  It's the teachers fault: throw money at it as an obvious solution and have politicians decide how and what to teach.

   Its the child's responsibility.  We need to teach kids personal accountability. At home and in school. I think.
