Why does POTUS want to know if he can pardon himself?

POTUS attorneys were supposedly asked if he can pardon aides, family and himself.  Why would that be necessary?

Consider the hatred and animosity directed towards the family, need you ask?  Or the massive witch hunt for anything - anything - that could harm any of them?

Unless there is a crime, there is no need for pardon.  He is inviting attention by threatening people.  He should just let it play out.  Accusers will look ridiculous when it is determined that there is nothing there and all of the taxpayers' money has been spent.

But that's not true (no crime=no need for pardon).  If not in jail = no need for a pardon, and in today's climate of hatred of Donald Trump and family "in jail" may not equal "committed a crime" at all.

Accusers already look ridiculous as they go from one thing to another, desperately looking for some method of removing Trump from office, and so far nothing at all has been found.

Trump has connections with Putin   Nothing found, so switch to...
Trump has Russian "connections"   Nothing found, so switch to...
Trump "colluded" with Russia to rig the election   Nothing found, so  switch to...
Jr. colluded with the Russian govt.   Nothing found, so switch to...
Jr. colluded with Russians that have "connections" to government   Nothing found, so switch to...
Jr. had a meeting with Russian intelligence.  (This one was a gem: one person that quickly left the meeting is an American citizen that was in the Russian army 30 years ago and now works to facilitate American adoptions of Russian children.  But somehow it became that he is Russian counter-intelligence.)

It just goes on and on and on and nothing is ever found.  Like Obama's birth certificate - it's time to give it up folks!  There's nothing there!  And like the birth certificate, nothing stops the naysayers and witch hunters.

One difference is that Obama did not obsess about the investigations against him. He was not posting constant tweets about Benghazi and the birth certificate thing being loads of BS. By constantly trying to undermine the current investigation, the media, and anyone else he sees as an opponent, it creates the appearance of guilt. If Trump would just shut up, it would create the appearance that there is nothing there. It would have also been helpful for his people to admit to their connections with Russia and meetings with Russian officials a long time ago.

Because he knows he is guilty.

Trump is guilty as hell and scared. So he doesn't go to jail, what's the worse thing you can do to a rich person? Perhaps he is scared of 'civil asset forfeiture' from DOJ Jeff Sessions?

I suspect that at least some of Trump's subordinates are guilty of some degree of collusion. But I could be wrong, and even if I am right, they were probably smart enough to make it impossible to prove this definitively. There are some Russians who know for sure, but I don't know if they would want to make this known. They could use this information against Trump, but admitting that they so directly intervened into another country's election will make them look real bad on the international stage.

The problem with Trump is that he keeps saying things that create the appearance of guilt, particularly when he brings up the topic of pardons. If there is nothing to hide, why even bring this topic up? And why do we keep finding out things that were not previously disclosed? Trump and his people have a big time credibility problem that it is probably too late to fix. After a while, the public will come to the most likely conclusion. As a general rule, the most obvious conclusion is the correct one.

Well, I can see how it might look that way from one point of view. However, Jr. was asked about meetings with Russians and denied there had ever been any. Then it was revealed that, lo and behold, actually he had met with the Russians. And Jared Kushner has been changing his story every few days. So, is it fair to say that some people might think that Jr. and Kushner have lied? And if they've lied about the meetings, then they might have lied about what the meetings are about?

And does anyone really think that the Russians went to that meeting empty handed?

There was something transferred to them according to what Kushner said.  I guess he revealed whatever it was during the inquisition.

You investigate to see if a crime is committed. You don't assume innocence just because nothing has been found. The purpose of an investigation is to find facts.
Here's a glaring repeated truth - Donald Trump has shown no respect for our Constitutional traditions or the way our government works. He wanted to change the way we do things - but the Constitution is a block in his view. His supporters like his style, but if you ride the bull of nationalistic divisive politics, you probably will be thrown. Our Constitution is dirt solid.
He's asking the question because he committed something. An old 1970's detective show states: "don't do the crime if you can't do the time." Keep your eyes on the sparrow. DJT might go flying.

As children we were always taught to ask for pardon if we burped or farted.  Don't know if this has anything to do with it.....

Jonny, Something really smelly is going on.  Will Jeff B. Sessions get a pardon.  This is going to impact his career.  He was a senator getting a some people's nerves.  Now he is at the center of the storm of people who need/wants pardons.

Even a hawk cannot fly with a broken wing - the far right has grounded its agenda in hate and turmoil. Perhaps, that dislike extends to our very democratic core. Sessions is from a state where even George Wallace saw that an inclusive U.S. is a healthy powerful creature. There are doctors who heal broken wings on a bird - lawyers and concerned Americans may conduct an amputation.

Because he's guilty of a crime and knows it???  Or to let subordinates know that he'll cover for them if they don't flip????   Who knows what goes through this crazy man's mind.  He's nuts.
