“A Date Which Will Live in Infamy”: FDR Asks for a Declaration of War.
"The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, stunned virtually everyone in the United States military. Japan’s carrier-launched bombers found Pearl Harbor totally unprepared. President Franklin Roosevelt quickly addressed Congress to ask for a declaration of war. Although he never mentioned Europe or the fact that Germany had by then declared war on the United States, the Pearl Harbor attack allowed him to begin the larger intervention in the European war he had long wanted."

I will never forget as so many sadly have! Thanks for reminding everyone!
thanks manly, this is a great post, I remember this day well, Corregidor in the Philippines was attacked by Japan, and the nation was in chaos too, it signal the beginning of WW2. It was a sad part of history.
My father was born in this year too and and he told me the terror, my grandparents experienced!
have a good day, (is it still snowing in Houston)? Maita
Wow...from the Philippine perspective....Thank you, Maita-PDH!
Our snow pretty much didn't make it through Saturday...sadly ... but who knows what lies ahead with such a snow flurry early in to our winter!?
yes snow will fall again when the Texas will win against Bama, yehey,
A very sad day indeed that will never be forgotten. Thanks MPM
I agree with ya'...may it never be forgotten!
K Partin: Thanks for remembering all those that went into harm's way...or were in harm's way on that fateful day!
Yes and Sadly, many of the loses may not have occured if the warnings given on December 3rd 1941 had been taken seriously instead of being ignored!
Not a good day at all.
Yes! PD...keen observation...could have helped greatly...another aspect to that part of history.
Living in Hawaii with my husband working at Pearl Harbor was definitely an eye opener for me too....just thinking about all of that hate and hurt made me sad whenever I drove to see my husband on base or had to go for a doc appointment on base. But seeing the men and women training or goofing off always made me smile too.
Reality...of a fact that many people lost their lives at that place...on that day.
Woke up this morning, remembering what day this day in history held. It is time to teach my children about it, to ensure that it is never forgotten.
Well done...Ivorwen...The greatest Generation is quickly leaving us to tell the story on our own!
that is good, I will pass this on to my children too
Of course, we're in the middle of a blizzard, so they should probably be brought inside.
Yes, my mother was just telling me how she heard about the attack. And how later that week how all of her brothers enlisted in the Marines. They spent years fighting in the Pacific, because her mother and father were Italian immigrants. (They all survived.) And the military thought it better that they not have to land and perhaps fight their family.
Interesting Point of History...and yet...another bad aspect of War...someone can very realistically end up fighting against ones relatives.

Another reason that I distrust conservatives, (GOP) domestic spending is pinch penny, while they turn a blind eye to DOD wasting money like it grows on trees. Add this to their cover up and subsequent embarrassment, and I ask what makes THEM the sacred cow? As a progressive type, I consider THIS...

Pear Harbor, the Tonkin gulf incident, the september 11th attack, this clash have the same common denominator, a U.S. attack leading to a "justified" international intervention to an invasion or war. Many of you will refute the theory but, unfortunately it passed the theory level to being...

Is it valuable to remember Pearl Harbor? If so, why? If not, why not?Today is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. When I was growing up in the 1960s and 70s, it was an important day. My parents remembered the horrible surprise of the attack. It was "a day that will live in infamy." Now, the...

After 70 years, why do we still call the attack on Pearl Harbor a sneak attack? It was a time of war and we knew that the entire Japanese navy was sitting 100 miles west of Pearl Harbor. Admiral Nimitz warned of an attack but Washington, with their infinite wisdom said the Japanese wouldn't dare...
