I have a considerable number of essays and papers from school, many of which could stand alone as hubs. Does anyone see a problem with that?

I used to buy and publish old academic papers.

Usually, the topics are not so search friendly and are not earners so I stopped, but it did turn a profit.

Go for it, but do some keyword research and tweaking

If your interest is in turning a profit, your next month should be devoted to learning the answer to that question.

My submissions to your search are:
Why Dont I make money from Adsense ?

Does HubPages pay?  - there is a video at this link that should be useful

But, learn from many sources. If your not doing keyword research than your just gambling.

          some searches ideas:

          30DC

          TKA

          Adwords keyword Tool

          Intention Tool

          Wonder Wheel

          Noble Samurai

I used the adwords keyword tool but I got warnings saying I might have too many so I took a bunch down. I'm not sure how I felt about "might."

I will extrapolate on what you said and guess that you put a bunch of keywords as tags?

That is a very, very , very small aspect of how keywords are used to catch and find traffic.

And I wouldnt worry about any "mights"..mites are microscopic after all

Seriously? yikes Type in keyword research in the search function in the top right hand corner and you will get all kinds of forum topics already on this.
