We are announcing a few updates today: HubTool Style Tips as well as an Official HubPages Style Guide, an improved Hubber Score, a cleaner HubTool design, and the removal of profile page links on comments to signed out user. All of the changes made are intended to improve the HubPages experience for Hubbers and readers. Check out our blog post for more details!
Wow - I just read the blog - great work, HP! I love the fact that you're analyzing what Google is up to and how it impacts the site.
The style guide is a great idea - and very much needed here. So many writers are eager to learn how to best present their material, and this should help them.
A question - I wasn't aware that Google had criteria on the overall number of links in a hub (or article). Can you give us any guidelines on what is acceptable? Some of us have quite a few (related) links in a few hubs, in an effort to provide resources for the readers. What do you suggest?
Thanks, Robin!
Hi Marcy,
Thanks for the comment. We are all working really hard around here and appreciate it. As far as comments go, if the links in your Hubs are useful, then include them. Here is what Google says in regards to links.
Thanks for the link to Google's wisdom on this - I was actually asking whether there were issues with the number of links within an article's text, not in comments. Off to read the Google Bible on it all!
On the display option it has a choice to apply a copyright symbol-- is the use of that being encouraged?
Hi Rochelle, we aren't necessarily encouraging it as most content sites don't provide this information, but we think it's a better option to have a consistent design if Hubbers choose to include it. If you hover over the question mark in the HubTool next to the copyright symbol, you will see more information.
What is the new threshold for do follow links? I noticed the blog states there is a significant change, but it doesn't specify the hubber score needed.
I've been wondering the same thing! Please let us know!
The follow link threshold is a Hubber Score of 85.
Hi Robin,
Is there a way to edit the copyright? I use the pseudonym Daughter of Maat and the copyright option for my hubs uses my legal name.
I think the copyright option is an AWESOME idea!!
We decided that a Hubber's real name was the best option for copyright, but we can discuss it again. For now, that's the only option. I'll let you know if we make any changes.
On the copyright, I like to actually put the full date of when I actually had written an article, poem, etc., and not just the year. Is there any way to do that? Otherwise, I would use the copyright option in display, but I guess that is totally manual to indicate a specific date.
What is the change regarding "dofollow" links as nothing is specified??
I really like the changes! They will benefit all of us, I think, but I'm not sure about this statement:
"Links in Comments: We found that hyperlinked usernames in Hub comments were crossing Google’s Webmaster Guidelines for the number of links in a page. To fix this problem, profile links in comments will no longer display for users who are not signed into a HubPages account."
If someone is not logged in as a Hubber, there is no profile link on their comment anyway, right?
Thanks HP for all your hard work!
HubPages is becoming much more user friendly! Appreciate the style tips and other helpful additions to the capsules.
I changed one hub this morning using the "new stuff" and found two glitches. One was no big deal (the button that purported to change my all caps headings didn't work), but the other glitch I can't work around. The HP generated copyright notice includes only my first name, Jill. Any way to fix that?
I tested the "all caps" style tip and it worked on my end in Chrome. Will you report the problem in the Report Technical Problems Forum with all of the details, e.g, browser, version, and operating system? As for the copyright, do you have your last name in your profile page, or did you perhaps just input your first name? You can check that when you edit your profile and make sure that your full name is given. Thanks, Jill!
Ah, so that's where the name is pulled from! Thanks, Robin. I'll try the all caps thing again. Appreciate your quick response. --Jill
The "all caps" did not work for me either at that time when I attempted to do so.
That is correct, but previously there were profile links to all of the Hubbers that had left comments. Those are the links that we were concerned about. Thanks for the feedback!
So the follow score has been increased to 85, views are dropping, my huberscore has for some reason dropped to 80! (Once in the 90's).... so that means I have just about zero reason for being on HP.. I will not be earning links to my other works and my earnings are nosediving!!
Maybe someone can explain why my huberscore is only 80!! Is there something wrong with my hubs? Do I say the wrong things?
