We need a philosophy forum

   I find the politics and religion forums too subjective. A philosophy forum would cover all the issues that those two subjects do not. If say I wanted to write about animal rights it would have to be something in recent(ish) political debate such as fox-hunting in order for it to fit into the political forum. A philosophy forum would make it possible to discuss the wider and more varied issues of this subject.
   
   Abortion is a subject better off in the Philosophy forum than the religious one. One reason for this being that there are significant numbers of atheists opposed to abortion as well as groups of just not generally religious people. There is also the matter of brutally enforced abortion in China which I've never heard any Militant Christian anti-abortionists comment on. Abortion is clearly a subject that transcends both religion and politics and is really more of a philosophical question.
   
   The two above issues are examples of ones that remain constant sources of hot debate despite the ever changing world of politics and the rigid and inflexible one of religion. So as Hubpages is mainly about debate, what are we waiting for??????????

      Andrew - I think it's a good idea. The official description of the religion forum includes Epistemology (which interests me a lot), but it doesn't make much sense to take this particular branch of philosophy and lump it in with religion. A philosophy forum would be its natural home.

   I imagine that a Philosophy/Philosophical sub-forum would go much the way of the Religion and Politics sub-forums.
   
   Perhaps instead they could merge the Religion, Politics and Philosophy sub-forums into one and call it Fight Club.

   Constructive thoughts Darkside, but we still need a new forum for arguments that don't fit comfortably into politics or religion. I don't think having an "Argue about whatever you like" forum is a good idea.

   We are considering creating a forum hierarchy that matches the category system that we recently rolled out.  Each of the 6000 odd categories will have a corresponding forum, but posts in any sub-category will roll up into the parent.  For example, a post in "Atheism & Skepticism" will appear there, but also under Religion & Beliefs.  Similarly a post in "The Quran" will appear there, but also in "Islam" and "Religion & Beliefs".  The idea is that this would allow each person to follow the forums specifically at level they are interested in.
   
   Any thoughts on this?

      I think establishing a forum that is title 'philosophy' would do better then a sub category of religion and beliefs. Maybe you guys could do sub categories such as sociology, psychology, behaviorism... etc. Under the parent category of Philosophical studies.
      
      Or how bout just 'isms' that should sum it up.

      I think it could work. Provided there's a bit of jiggling around and maybe even a change in some categories if a better fit is found when considering sub-forum structure.

   it seems we are mostly afraid of things we dont know much about. or simply dont want to know. there is no place that we cannot find religion. And Islam and quran cannot be exempted from the issue. Islam too has it own philosophical point of view in virtually all matters that may involve family, children, society, leadership animal rights etc. I think there is nothing wrong in involving religion in philosophy.

      There are many branches of philosophy that do not include religion,though. No fear of the unknown here
      
      A separate philosophy forum is an excellent idea, Andrew - it is as deserving as science, religion and politics. I love sport, but it is strange that there is a place to discuss Manchester United but none for Aristotle.

            Could be, although some state Socrates. Mind you, the eastern influence is often overlooked. They did some pretty amazing things in China, Persia and India, amongst others.
            
            Going back to your Islam point - the Islamic philosophers and scholars of the Golden Age made some great advances, too. If it were not for them, we would not know much about the Ancient Greeks.

    Oh no! Not another philosophy forum!!! Every forum I've been to, overflows with that philosophy stuff ... rises above the eyeballs and soaks the brains too ... or whatever is left of it ...

    Thanks everybody for your contributions. I don't think having parent categories with sub-categories is a good idea. What sub-categories would politics have? Labour, conservative, republicans, democrats? People who support those parties/ideas should be arguing in the same forum otherwise there would be no argument.
    
    How about just starting a philosophy forum and see how it goes? Surely this would be a less taxing proposition to the Hubpages Staff than the parent-subcategory method.
