Sort of related, but still different from the previous discussion of the value of backlinks...
Having quality backlinks helps with visibility.
But wouldn't it be self-defeating to use URL tracking links? Here, I'm talking about the affiliate/URL tracker backlinks we can create, with the "_whatever" added to the link.
Would a search engine not "see" something like "hubpages.com/_mytracker/hub/myhub" as a site DIFFERENT from "hubpages.com/hub/myhub?"
Or am I missing something here?

Complicated isn't it?
I think the term backlink could more appropriately be used to describe a link that someone else has made to your hub rather than a tracker you have used yourself.
Links with trackers in them actually redirect (301) to the URL without the tracker. I believe search engines will still count links that redirect as a vote for the final page, but they probably discount the weight of vote somewhat.
It's up to you whether you want to use trackers in your links or not. It is worth noting that most social bookmarking sites prohibit using any kind of affiliate mechanism in links, so you probably should not use them at sites like digg, sphinn, etc. My recommendation would be to at least use them in places where you are directly encouraging people to sign up for HubPages and in places where you expect a lot of clicks.

If I use my own blog to backlink my articles will using the tracker code make the links not work as backlinks?

There is a lot of bad SEO (search engine optimization) advice out there, and the use of automated services that procure backlinks to your Hubs is one particularly egregious example. Using services to get backlinks can result in your Google AdSense and/or HubPages account permanently banned. Yes, we...

I am working on one of my new websites - and I want to link back to my hubs here. How many times is this OK to do on a website page before it is overkill?

Article for discussion. I know that this recent development has already been mentioned by some hubbers in forums. But I am now wondering if this might be the main reason why we are seeing the current traffic plunges for many hubbers? See link...

I've read and reead the hubs on URLs, RSS & Backlinks. I thought I was fairly literate in computers, trust me, I'm stumped.Adding RSS - okay so I want to add an RSS capsule to my hub. I read that you can add your profile URL as an rss but it tells me NO! I don't understand backlinks...
