Anyone Else Lost a Decent Number of Backlinks Lately?

I check Webmaster Tools at least weekly to see what's going on with my HP account.  I started keeping track of links on March 25, when I noticed that there had been a slight decrease. At that time my PR was still the same as it had been for the last year. I noticed quite a decrease on May 14 and saw that my PR had decreased a rank. It is now the same.  I lost 2681 links. I still have a decent amount of links, but are HP links now being devalued?

Many of these were HP links, but not all.

Is it because of the new layout since there are no longer related hubs in certain categories?

    Hubbers deleting hubs?

Sites dropping out of google index?

    Anyone else?

According to Market Samurai, I now have 3000 odd internal links, but I am sure I had a lot more before, so you may be on to something.

I noticed that in the new layout - the fact that preference is now given to our own Hubs in the "Others are now reading" section must mean we're far less interlinked than we were before.

Also bear in mind that with the recent Panda/Penguin changes, a lot of sites (and some HubPages sub-domains) have lost rank. If you had backlinks at other sites which lost rank, then those backlinks become less valuable.

I'm pretty sure it's exactly as Marissa said. Are you loosing HP backlinks or the others?

I have not noticed a change, however, I have not been one to watch them that closely. I will attempt to keep an eye on it now, however. Thanks for bringing this to light.

Google purges sites from their index all the time.

I know they are constantly purging. I just thought it was odd to see such a drastic loss of links in that time period and wondered if others had noticed a substantial decrease in links.

Is there a way to get a graph of the number of backlinks on WebMaster tools? The number of links I have look pretty much constant.

I don't know if there is a graph. I just check the sections Links to your Site and click on the source domains.

I don't want to post my personal info here. I'm simply curious to see if other hubbers have noticed a decrease in the Links to your Site, and if a large portion came from HP. I still have a lot of links coming in from HP, but did lose many in that time period.

Hmm, I guess I'll keep a watch on it from now on then.

If you want to keep track on a weekly basis, be sure to write down the figures and dates.

I just checked the Fashion and Beauty topic page to see that are 53,984 hubs published. Others are also reading section lists 5 links instead of the current HP layout that lists 6 related hubs. So I suppose that would affect the number of links with topics that have a large number of published hubs.

I guess I should do it on an Excel sheet so that I can get a graph too smile thanks for the suggestion. Plus you should subtract 1 more to make it 4 linked rather than 5 because each hub gets 3 from the same hubber. But, of these not many will be around and of the rest not many will have hubs in groups.

Thanks for your responses. I read that many sites have lost rank with Panda/Penguin.

It does appear that the majority of links were linked from HP. It is listed under Links to your Site. I suppose it may be a combination of factors.

I just thought it was coincidental that it happened in a rather short period of time during site changes, Panda and Penguin updates. I wasn't very happy to be knocked down a rank.

HP does generate an extraordinary amount of links. But it is interesting to see the different domains that link to our hubs.
