How do you deal with cravings at 4-5 p.m?

Many people have the craving for sweets and snacks  at around 4-5 p.m. And they end up taking high calorie food, if they are not conscious about it. How do you deal with this?

100 calorie bag of microwave popcorn and ice water - holds me over til dinner and tastes yummy too. Also a fresh peach or a crispy apple will work if you don't have the popcorn handy.

I've read that sometimes when we feel hungry, we're actually experiencing dehydration more than true hunger.  When it's late in the afternoon and close to dinner, I usually opt for a cup of tea instead of a snack.  It seems to work pretty well for me.

I find that just keeping busy is enough to keep your mind off of food until your next meal (unfortunately I used to be a little too good at this, I actually collapsed a couple of times before realising I needed something to eat... not very graceful haha).

The other comments are absolutely right - your body can mistake thirst for hunger so it's important to stay hydrated. If you find that you absolutely can't take your mind off of food though, try and have a healthy snack such as fruit rather than bingeing on high calorie food. This is often easier if you don't keep any of these foods in your house at all, if you do then they might be all you can think about.

Thanks Rebecca for your response. I particularly like your last line- do'nt keep those foods in your house--good idea. But, you have to because of kids, guests etc. I personally feel, you have to have a strong will power to avoid high calorie foods.

I usually drink lots of bottled or filtered water or if I am home I have either green tea or white tea, either hot or cold.  That's works for me.  It curbs my appetite until dinner time.

    Hello Chitrangada,
Nice question! When you have a food craving during evening times, you may divert your mind by getting indulge in a workout like a brisk walk or any other favourite hobby of yours.
Remember whatever you choose should be healthy and not add on calories.
    All the Best!!
