   Most of us don't go outside as much people did once upon a time.  We're stuck in front of the television or computer unfortunately.  Today's conveniences have kept us indoors.

   I agree with all of the answers below - excessive indoor time and use of sunblock but a major factor is that we finally realized in medicine that we needed to test for it and thus we are testing more frequently. There is research linking many illnesses to Vit D deficiency such as Multiple Sclerosis. I am sure there is more to come on this topic.

   A sedentary lifestyle, kids spending way too much time playing video games indoors when they should be playing outside under the sun, use of sunblock, poor nutrition high in junk food and low in nutrient-rich foods, depletion in nutrient-value of foods due to pesticides and other modern farming methods.

    For adults I think it is because we work longer hours in a competitive market, and for children I think it is because they spend so much for time indoors playing video games and less time outside.
