Updated on October 2, 2011

Walleye, Walleye, Walleye

For most Fisher people the walleye trip is the biggest one of the year. The biggest question though is what is the best way to catch this crazy fish. For the most part it comes down to where you are going to fish and the time of year you plan to finish. I don't care how, when, why or where you fish for walleye, in almost all cases it's going to be the best freshwater fishing experience you will ever have.

Without a doubt walleye are the most popular freshwater fish you will catch in Canada. Not only are they the best eating but in most cases also put up the best fight. You will absolutely know when you have a walleye on the end of your line.

One of the biggest thrills you will ever find is catching a lunker walleye on the end of an ultralight rod!

The largest number of walleye caught in Canada is usually done so in the spring time. If you're fishing in the North even through the summer you will usually experience great walleye fishing. Now when we talk about the fall time we're talking about a great chance to catch trophy walleye. The best news of all is no matter what season you decide to fish in, with a little effort walleye can and should be your fish of choice.

As spring turns to summer in the lakes and rivers you will notice walleye gathering at underwater reefs. For the most part walleye prefer gravel on the bottom, light currents and are usually found in around 25 feet of water. When it comes to planning your strategy it will be important to learn the structure of the bottom of your fishing hole.

When it comes to methods of fishing for walleye it seems the jigging is still the most popular. Of course you might have to experiment with colors and sizes and variations of different jigs. You need to understand that conditions can change very quickly when it comes to fishing for walleye. Because of this you need to be able to change quickly as well. You need to understand the walleye and you need to understand how you might have to change.

If you really want to get your adrenaline pumping you need to experience a walleye hitting your hook. However after you are done with the thrill of the catch the best part is yet to come.
