Ways to Raise your Hub Score
I was asked by fellow hubber, RobertAllenSavage, to answer this question. In fact, I woke to find an email from the editors here at HubPages, with his request to answer or to write a hub about it.
Now, I am sort of new to HubPages, have only been a member for 3 months, so I am sure that there are plenty of folks who could answer this question better than I. But I will share what I have learned so far.
The first and perhaps the most important thing I learned, was to write good content. I studied the hubs of others who wrote about hubs and writing good content was always at the top of their list. To write a good piece, you must know what it is you are trying to say in your hub so doesn’t appear to just be a rant. Research is usually necessary for me.
When writing opinion, I always want to make sure that my opinion is based on some kind of fact. Expound on your topic; give reasons for your opinion or facts to back you up. From reading other hubs I have also learned that the search engines like hubs that are at least 700 words in length.
Presentation is also important. You want people to read your hub and the length of time that a visitor is on your hub is measured. The first glance they get will determine whether they stick around and read your hub, so your hub should be attractive looking and balanced. Add a few pictures or video, just enough to catch the eye and help portray what you are talking about. Adding a poll question can be helpful in gaining their attention as well.
Writing in caps is like yelling, so avoid writing in caps because it is rude to yell at your guests. I also avoid writing in bold.
I use Bold and CAPS for gaining attention to a certain word or phrase in an article or perhaps for a title or sub-title.
Use plenty of capsules. All of your text does not need to be in one capsule. Mix them up. Try different variations of your normal arrangement. A little extra effort is worth it. Just like what realtors call curb appeal, the new coat of paint, added flowers or freshly cut grass, the little extras you add to your hubs may well lengthen the amount of time someone will spend reading your hub or perhaps give them a better reason for hitting a thumbs up.
If your aim is to improve your presence on HubPages, you must have a presence. You need to be an active member of the community. It took me a while to realize this. I started in the Sandbox, figuring it to be a safer place to learn to play the HubPages way.
Having been burned and attacked on other forums by bullies resorting to name calling and such, I was reluctant to jump into the forums with both feet before testing the waters. Being active on the forums and in the Q & A gets your name seen by other hubbers. If they like what you have to say, the chance that they will visit your site increases. While your goal may not be to get other hubbers to read your hubs, it will help in your overall hub score.
Read other hubbers and make intelligent comments. Follow those whose hubs you enjoyed reading. Post fan mail to them, let them know you took the time to read their hubs. Chances are they will at least come back to your site and read a hub or two. If they like what they read, they will follow you and that may also help your score. Responding to comments left on your hubs shows you care about your visitors.
For many of the writers here on HubPages, the goal is to make money. The use of keywords and back links are very important tools you can use to further that goal. While I understand the usage of keywords, taking advantage of SEO and back links are new to me and I am still learning how to accomplish those. There are many hubs written about utilizing these techniques. I recommend these 2 hubs to start:
The goal on HubPages is not to have a high hub score or the highest number of followers. But every comment and every page click seems to mean something to someone. Our hub scores fluctuate often and from what I gather from other hubbers, it doesn’t mean too much until it dips too low.
If you truly want to understand how to write high scoring hubs, I suggest you click on the word hubbers at the top of the page. There you will find a list of all of the hubbers here on HubPages. At the top of the list are the highest scoring hubbers. Click on them and read their hubs. Some of their hubs are years old and are still scoring in the 90s. Study the hubs. What are they writing about? Are they involved in their hubs or just rehashing the obvious? Pay attention to the layout. What makes the hub unique? Do you find it attractive? While advising not to copy anyone else’s work, I do recommend that you notice the how they portray and display the subject matter that they are writing about.
Good Luck Robert! Your writing is good and will improve even more as you continue to write. I hope I have answered your question in a way that is clear and helpful.
