In The Eighties

In The Eighties

Back in the Eighties

The trouble people took

To go ready to go out

Get that special look.

Looking at old photos now

It's easy to confess

The fashion sense and mullet hair

People were a bit of a mess.

In Britain in the Eighties

There were only 4 channels on TV

It's amazing thinking about it now

That there was enough for us to see.

Pop bands in the Eighties

Had names like Wet Wet Wet and Duran Duran

At first we thought these names had been typo's

But it was all their big masterplan.

The music just like the fashion

probably wasn't great

As the decade wore on

It became a bit second rate.

Entertainment was very good

Although lacking games or Youtube

You could always spend plenty of time

Playing with your Rubik's cube.

These days there is 24 Hour shopping

Back then you'd be in for a shock

You had to hurry to buy what you needed

Most were shut by about 6 o'clock.

Also if you wanted to watch some late TV

Do some night time viewing

You'd have to make do with a video

With the TV there's nothing doing.

Yes the channels went off around midnight

That was just the fact

So if you really wanted to watch anything

You'd rather have VHS than Betamax.

It's amazing to realize that in the eighties, most of us did not own a video camera or a computer and for ordinary people there was no internet or satellite TV.

Good Hub.

Cool I was a mere kid coming up in the eighties. What a time and the way people dressed... LOL great tribute to the 80's!

Hi, loved this! very funny and very true! but in our defense then the costumes were stupid, but they did use to change themes and music then a lot more than today, if you look back to the seventies they had punks, forties clothes, teddy boys and 'normals' then the 80s had new romantics, etc and of course bikers! yeah! still do with those, but these days it is RnB and RnB and RnB and......oh yeah, RnB! yawn! the music has been exactly the same since the early 90s and the teens still wear 'normal' clothes! boring! I was a punk in the late 70s early 80s, purple hair, black lipstick dog collar, complete with studs, ripped tights, and chains all over me! and that was on a quiet night out! ha ha ha ha ha great poem, cheers nell

Hi Nell, Thanks for the comment. I totally agree with you. I was mentioning the music and fashion wasn't so good at times in the 80's but at least it had its own identity. Like you say things seem really similar over recent decades and you can't tell a lot of stuff apart.

Cheers. Michael.

Wow, I don't miss the 80's clothes. It was worse than the 60's.

Only 4 channels? Over here in The Colonies, we had more than that in the 70's over broadcast television. Only one of them was 'public'. We had ABC, NBC, and CBS, and at least one independent station along with one or more PBS stations sometimes broadcasting the same thing at the same time.

Hi nicomp, Thanks for reading and commenting. Yes, sometimes the Eighties seems a lot further back with all the changes there has been. There were only 4 TV channels here in UK back then. I'm not exactly sure when we got a lot more choice through satelite and cable channels but probably into the early 1990's. Cheers. Michael.
