Is HubPages about writing or about the subjects we address?
There are some extremely talented people writing on HubPages. Their hubs reveal that they not only love what they are writing about, but they love writing. There are others who produce hubs of lesser quality, but they are obviously passionate about the subjects they address. So, is HubPages about writing or about the subjects we choose to address?
I believe the original purpose of Hubpages was to be an outlet and meeting place for writers. A place where they can exchange ideas, critiques and resources. However, I have found that can change with the subject matter your writing involves. If you write on a political or religious subject you will find that the subject immediately becomes the focus. This is a shame but I think it is important that people can share their ideas, complaints, contemplations and random thoughts here on Hubpages rather than having to find somewhere else to do it.
All that being said Hubpages is supposed to be about writing. Rather than giving our commentary on someone's political views we are probably supposed to be critiqueing their writing style and expertise. I am guilty of this but there are plenty of folks who write for the subject and the conversation that comes with it so no one is wrong in either choice they make.
Interesting question. I guess both are very important, but it seems the How-To's and recipes are most popular. I'm still learning how to negotiate "Hubworld!" Thanks for the question! It will surely inspire lots of new Hubs!
Thanks for your input heavenleigh. I am trying to find my niche and am just writing about whatever comes up. I'm enjoying it and drawing from experiences I had forgotten about.
"drawing from experiences I had forgotten about" This is a WONDERFUL reason to write - like passing down stories to future generations so that they can learn, maybe laugh, and have a connection.
Hubpages is about both writing and the topics we write about, and about much more than that. You can have a technically brilliant piece of writing that is grammatically perfect and beautifully punctuated but without the writer's passion for the subject it will be cold and mechanical.
Writers have to start somewhere, and having the passion is a good place to begin, the technical ability comes with practice. There are some great writers on Hubpages and some wonderful budding talent.
I will soon be writing a hub on it as i think it is topic worth writing.
Hubpages is a great platform for the budding writers. A writer who can write but has never got a place where s/he can show work to the general audience, Hubpages helped such writers. If you are passionate writer and want to express yourself, a hub... read more

Assuming you care to be visible to big G.1. Start with a niche topic that can get a lot of search results. Use the adword keyword tool to find it. If you don't know what that is google "adword keyword tool". 2. Make a hub based on that topic that is somewhat broad concerning that...

Forgive my ignorance but what is the purpose and the advantages or the disadvantages of putting up your book in your hubs or a series of hubs? (Especially for those who have done this firsthand in here)
