Several inventors made crucial discoveries and inventions that culminated in today's LED (light-emmitting diode) light. It all started in 1907, when H. J. Round discovered electroluminescence - the fact that certain chemicals, when charted with electricity, emit light. Oleg Vladimirovich Losev made the first LED in 1927, but nobody did much with it. Rubin Braunstien added to the research. Robert Biard and Gary Pittman got the first LED-related patent in 1961, but that was for an infrared LED, which radiates infrared radiation (heat), not visible light. The first LED that radiated visible light was a red LED from Nick Holonyak, Jr. in 1962. After that, many others contributed to making LEDs brighter and in more colors, adding control of brightness and color, and bringing down the cost.
