Abraham (Honest Abe) Lincoln with more than half a million soldiers and who knows how many non-combatants dead from the Civil War.

What a great question.  I am sure that the 'Lincoln' answer is probably the closest one for Americans, but the Truman answer re: blasting the cities in Japan with the atomic bomb is probably the international answer.

My answer would be Jackson, although statistically I know this is inaccurate.  For reasons of the horrific genocide of the Native Americans that is my final answer.

In looking at the statistics of wars, top of the charts at 38 million deaths was attributed to Emperor Mao.

Next in line would be Hitler and Stalin at a whopping 19 million

World War II  estimates are 55 million dead but that combines the atrocities comited by Japan as well as Germany and China's revolutionary war. Every country in the world was at fault here.

One thing that bothers me is that this question seems to come up a lot.  What PRESIDENT killed the most people while in office?

    How about these questions?

What country attacked Perl Harbor and then blames the United states for retaliation?

What countries were moving through Europe and Asia destroying and murderering at leisure before the United States became involved? And we didn't even want to get involved!  That was proven when Truman said no to a ship of Jewish refugees trying to run to our country for safety.  What a sad sad day that was!  I'm sure wherever he is he is regretting his mistake.

I'm an American Christian woman and I feel that war in general are man made atrocities in every country.  If men would stop the greed and desire to dominate, to conquer, we wouldn't have war.  It is true in every country in the world, not just America.

If you are talking about the number of Americans, it is Lincoln.  Total number of people, it is Truman.  What I don't get is the picture of George Bush...it really has nothing to do with the question.

Not to steel your thunder (I wasn't a fan of Bush...way to liberal) , but compared to some of our other Presidents, he is not even in the running.

I don't understand (steal your thunder) I was just explaining the picture I used here. I'm A-political. Voting for anybody just explodes their ego. Democracy gives us the 'freedom' to vote for  our next dictator.

Sorry, I misunderstood you. I thought you were trying to make the point that Bush was responsible for a huge number of deaths. Those numbers are trivial compared to the deaths in most of our other wars.
