Will America ever live down its racial past? Can we ever forgive and be forgiven?

Slavery is a part of our past but will racism continue and be a part of our future? Will African Americans be able to find a way to forgive and White Americans find forgiveness? Will we ever learn to live together as equals? What do you think Hub America?

why stop there. it isn't only black and white. there is the hatred of original people,(as i am one and familiar with it.) the asians and hispanic get the hatred poured out at them too. hell my wife was abused and looked down on for not being as smart as others. not just as a kid but as an adult. it still happens. all races have fought and looked down on other races. as americans we must put away our prefixes. no more native- americans, african- americans ect...
just americans. brothers and sisters who will stand up and fight with, who we will protect without worry of color, religion, sexual orientation, or any other reason. you're here, your a citizen, your my family. get over the past. all i ever said to my oppressors here was,"we are a conquered people, now please let me live as all citizens do. if i make it on my own with my friends by my side, then i've succeeded. if i don't, then i've failed. but i will still be free."

I don't think you can or should ever forget your history. I was born in 1969, and the only world I have known is an integrated world. I can only speak for myself, but skin color or ethnicity does not matter at all to me; I judge people by their words and deeds.

I think that one day we will be able to move on from our racist past. We made a BIG step when we elected Pres. Obama but we have to embrace the Golden Rule hardcore. I live in the DEEP South, Georgia to be excact. They sent "bad" slaves LA, GA, AL, MS, FL, because the work was hardest. I have NEVER encouter any kind of racism from Southern whites. They are the nicest people you ever want to meet. Southern whites put forth effort to show that they are not like their grandparents.

Now, my home state of California is one the racist states I have ever lived especailly the Central Valley. African Americans only live in two parts of Cali, the Bay Area and LA that's it! I got called a N in Santa Barbara, Ca on State St. When I moved to Modesto, Ca, my next door neighbors (white) would not speak to us and they moved out after about a month. They really got to know their neighbors, right! I had work in the Bay Area which is an 90 min commute on a good day because I couldn't get a job in Modesto.

There needs to be a UNITED effort from all 50 states to bury our ugly past. We can start by prosecuting police who beat up and murder inoccent black people. We need to STOP hating on gay people, immigrants and anybody who is different for us. That's the number one problem reason why we can't get away from our ugly past. Every time someone different comes to the US people act an ASS. You miss out on good people when you judge them for skin color.

We must first acknowledge the truth about racism in our society. Something your question failed to do. Slavery is not the reason blacks have a distrust of whites and to somehow attempt to make this the case is disingenuous.

It has liitle to nothing to do with slavery!

SOBF, seems you have misread the question or I didn't state it clear enough. Slavery is the genesis of the problem that is why I say it is part of the past. Racism continues, it is the problem. The question is will it continue and if it doesn't can African Americans find a way to forgive and White Americans find forgiveness? Hope this makes it clear.
