Why did I receive negative feedback for the following...?
The question was "Should guns be restricted to the military, police, and security guards?" My answer was "Absolutely not. Our forefather's fought and died for us to have the right to bear arms and the reasons they did that is as clear and valid today as it was back then. As my father says, "You'll pry my gun out of my cold dead fingers." And I agree." My father is retired Army and risked his life for our freedom. He would die for it now the same as he would have in uniform. That is not negative, it's patriotic, so I'm very curious as to why it's being viewed as a negative thing?

Probably because just because someone has a different view to you on Gun Laws. They may have strong reasons, as well as you, to have their point of view. Also bear in mind Hubpages members are from all around the world and therefore their reason could be related to happenings/history in their own Country.

Everyone has their own opinion and is entitled to it. You have the right to say what you wish and they have the right to agree or disagree. That is how freedom works... You can't let up or down votes get to you...just say what you feel.

Must have been some bleeding heart liberal who got negative on you . And I am with you on this one . The liberals In Government are doing their best to take awat the Second amendment rights of the citizens as they are trying to move us Into socialism .

Why should one seek to carry a Gun? You may know yourself to be moral about safely handling a Gun, but you do not know the other person. Gun is violence and ultimately Death. It is a Wonder that certain people sees it as a toy.

Thank you Tony and Uninvited Writer. I appreciate the time and thoughtfulness of your answers. Negative feedback to me would be if someone was personally attacking the questioner, not for having an opinion that is different from someone else's. But I guess to each his own...

It is upsetting to have to wonder if you were misinterpreted or somehow out of line. An alternative is to consider that too many people form opinions based on narrow levels of experience. Most people don't think about leaving the lights on until they've had to pay the bill. Your father has paid that bill and he knows the value of our freedom. Keep on telling them, Happy Her, before we're all left in the dark.

Ignorant pussies? I am not either one of those things. I would not vote for such a restriction myself, I support all freedoms. I am standing far to your left just the same.
Maybe the bleeding heart is afraid of HAVING a bleeding heart. Automatic rifles tearing into students at school and gun violence on the streets are what anti-gun people are standing against, not hunters or people who are looking for protection and freedom in their right to bear arms.
It's not anti-patriotic, it's a realization society should not accept criminals with machine guns.

I think that someone took your quote of your father out of context ("...out of my cold, dead fingers..."), particularly because similar lingo is in use by extremist elements in this country. When many hear that expression ("out of my cold dead hands") it conjures up imagery of the archetypical "gun nut," burying caches of weapons for "the end times."
I don't support this interpretation (particularly in light of the stated context) but understand it and felt it of value to try to explain it.
Now, I personally am an armed citizen. I believe wholeheartedly in self-defense, on EVERY level, including the right to carry responsibly and yet I still happen to embrace many liberal views and a liberal approach to many issues.
In no way, however do I see myself as the archetypical, "knee-jerk liberal, tree hugging, new age, pacifist."
...And anyone who has a problem with it is more than welcome to...well...step outside. (lol)

The negativity most likely is a result of all of the misinformation and misrepresentations by the media and unfortunately a lot of left leaning liberals who don't understand the constitution. Or those same people want to refer to the constiution as a "living" document that they can change . For example, gun control advocates often cite that when a gun law is passed that gun deaths go down. What they neglect to tell you is that deaths by stabbing or any number of other reasons goes up dramatically. It may sound cliche but "guns dont kill people; people kill people".
The fact of the matter is that any time they have enacted anti gun legislation the crime rate has almost invariably risen because criminals are exactly that.. CRIMINALS . they don't follow the law anyway, so the only thing gun control laws do is disarm law abiding citizens and leave them without the ability to protect themselves.
Last point. The true intent of the second amendment was self defense in the sense of defending yourself against criminals but rather to defend ourselves against an oppressive government. Basically it was written so that if the government ever attempted to take away our GOD GIVEN freedoms that we would have the ability to stand up.
I will get off my soap box now ;) Good question.

Because there are too many ignorant pussies in this day and age. They've forgotten (or never learned) as to why the second amendment to the Constitution comes right after the first. They don't realize that the Bill of Rights is a "package deal". You don't get to pick your top five and sh**can the rest. Note: Liberals have their favorite five, and conservatives have their favorite five. With very little overlap. Which is why this country is now an example of socialist-fascist-corporatism.
