   What do you think of Princess Kate Middleton being pregnant?
   
   I know many people love the royals around the world, but there is a lot of feeling that one more leech in the royals is on its way. What with people starving, no homes and low wages, I used to love the royals, but now it just drives me mad! So, whats your take on it?

   Woohoo! I'm excited for William and Kate. A royal baby! 4th is line, this baby bumped Harry to 5th place. I hope she feels better soon and is released from the hospital.

   It had to happen soon, as most royals try to have a baby within the first year of marriage. To have extreme morning sickness, though...yikes! I just can't wait to see what all of the name possibilities will be. It's making me want to choose my baby's name asap so that I can say it wasn't influenced by their choice in names!

   First off - I didn't know she was until I read your question! (Then again, probably not a lot of sports pages reported it, in Britain or elsewhere... )
   
   Personally, I think it's wonderful news. As a passionate royalist and loyalist, I am intensely proud and protective of our royal family and am always delighted to hear news of further progenies to carry on the line. With so little left to be cheerful about in the modern day UK and the decimation of so many things we once held so dear, I personally think our Royal Family is one of the biggest symbols of our nationhood and our pride as a people.
   
   What a great Christmas present for the happy couple!

      Thanks Gordon, yes you may be right. I do tend to sit on the fence about it, and all things royal. Sometimes I love it, other times when things get hard I get all grouchy! haha!

   Ah, Nell, well now you know how I feel! I hear too this illness happens mostly with twins! How exciting would that be? I don't think about their money, they get none from me and they are royalty and my bible teaches that is none of my concern since I look to none of them for my support here nor there so I just enjoy the fantasy! May she be well soon and have a great pregnancy and bring the world many smiles!

   Hi Nell. Being an American, I'm mostly indifferent to royals everywhere. And royal news is mildly amusing at best. The last time I checked, it was still legal for rich people--royals included--to have children. However I'm not sure that it's possible for the children of royals to have normal lives.
   
   By the way, we did have a 'royal' of our own in Northern California back in the 19th Century. A man who called himself Emperor Norton 'held court' in the city of San Francisco. People who were enamored of his chutzpah made it possible for him to survive without doing much real work.

      Sorry, that has nothing to do with it, the question asked why ... I offered a possible reason. I didn't tell US farmers how to run their work practice or society. I'm obviously very important to you to trawl through my posts to grasp at any failing.

    I think people who declare themselves unemployed and claim benefits, when they are earning undeclared income on the side, are much more a drag on the country than any amount of royals.
    Also Nell, you need to correct the wording in your question. The lady  is no longer Kate Middleton. She is now Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.
    Sorry if I come over as a bit abrupt. I just hate "the politics of envy".

       Fair enough christopher, I just think some of the royals are leeches, such as edward, and andrew. the unemployed however should be able to earn a bit more, there dole money is equivalent to one royal meal! not good, but thanks for your opinion.

    I'm so happy for the two future parents, they are such a charming couple! As I don't pay taxes in UK, I have no problems about income to consider and I can just admire the display of royalty from afar. What I do know is that, human nature being what it is, if Kate doesn't produce a child relatively soon, the news would be full of question of the "What is the matter? Is something wrong?  Is the marriage a go?, etc." type. I also rather liked the idea of Harry being pushed further away in the line. (I admit to being rather old-fashioned in my views, can't stand those pranks and weird attitudes).
    I wish both the parents and the new baby the best of luck!

    The news is interesting but not surprising. Not surprising in that most women who marry into the royals (I would venture to say all women who do - with the exception of Charles' most recent bride) are seen after one fashion or another as breeding stock to produce heirs. The late and great Diana, Princess of Wales was seen that way. I wonder if they get sick and tired of being so famous that the 'razzi' bend over backward to get photo ops of them in embarrassing or compromising situations - which the rest of us have every day, but we don't have a troop of photographers following US around. The press sensationalizes EVERYthing that they do. I was hospitalized with severe dehydration associated with gestational hyperemesis and was close to organ failure with my youngest child, but I don't recall it making the papers.
    
    A loyalist (an Anglophile) from way back, I'm still not sure that the royals need to live off the taxes of the people; with the billions they are worth, they could easily live quite comfortably (extravagantly by our standards) off the interest from their current assets. That said, I can imagine the public outcry around the world if they suggested that they were thinking of abolishing the monarchy!!
    
    It may sound calloused, but there are always going to be poor people. That they are poor while the royals are rich is just a fact of life. It's an unfortunate fact of life, but it is a fact. There is no guarantee that if the tax money spent on the royals' "salaries" were to be suddenly available, that the government would spend it on programs for the homeless and low-income families.
    
    It's not an easy question because there are so many divergent opinions. A large part of the problem lies in the need some people have to implicate themselves in the lives of people who are "famous;" they delude themselves into thinking that they "know" these people. We don't know them. We only know what we think we know. I say leave these poor rich people alone and let them have a little privacy.
