I'm a Cancer, so why don't I have Cancerian traits?

    - I'm extremely sensitive!  Most Scorpios and Sagittarius' are very attracted to me.  And last, I'm a dragon in Chinese astrology.  What does it all mean? - put it together for me....

I had a similar problem of being a Leo with very little Leo traits.  When I was a kid, someone explained that it was because I was born on the "cusp" of Virgo and the traits blended, etc.  This didn't really explain "me".

I've found that the way we were raised can affect our traits, perceptions and behaviours.  For example, being raised with the rule of "Children should be seen and not heard" puts damper on a Leo's showmanship :-s

Interesting enough, my Native American totem astrological sign wasn't much like me either.

When I discovered Chinese astrology, I found the description for a Water Rat was far more accurate and a Leo or Leo/Virgo cusp baby.

When I was a teenager, my aunt handed me a copy "The Secret Meaning of Names" by Pierre La Rouzic and told me to look up my name.  The premise of the book is that our names affect our personalities.  So, I looked up Rosa .... The description was nothing like my personality at the time.  My aunt suggested that I look up the name nearest to the nickname my mother had called me all my life.  BINGO!  I was floored.  The description fit me perfectly.  Apparently, the names we identify ourselves with DOES affect our personality :-)

Point is, there's not one thing that dictates our personality.  Astrology, names, Feng Shui numbers - they can give us a glimpse of traits COMMON among a specific group, but who we are is determined by our training (or retraining of self), the way we view the world, the way we choose to behave, etc.

To put it "all together" as you put it, you'd need to get a proper reading.  Being a Cancer doesn't mean you are sensitive.  In terms of planetary forces there are particular angles that influence a person's sensitivity including position to the constellations and the angles to other planets.

If you want a reputable free interpretation then send me a personal email and I'll put you onto a site that will help you out.  But best that you start to widen your astrological knowledge from constellations to the whole pie - houses and angles.  It's much more accurate than constellations.

Having Mars in Pisces can make for a very sensitive person.  Cancer doesn't have a monopoly on sensitivity and nor does the Moon have a monopoly on sensitivity.  So Sun in Cancer does not necessarily make you sensitive either.  Best get a bigger picture.  You need to know your time of birth by the way.

    Hi John,
Having your Sun in Cancer is just a small part of the picture. Every planet is in a sign. Then your Moon is in one, that's your emotional side. Your ascendant, the facade you wear until you get to know people, is the third part of the Sun, Moon, Ascendant trinity. I have hubs on Moon signs and Ascendants, with links if you put your B-day info in. Then it also depends on the distance the planets are from each other, called aspects. I have a hub on that, but it really only scratches the surface. Mercury and Venus are closest to the Sun, and move the fastest. Mercury is how you think, and Venus is your social and love nature. With your love of music and precise knowledge of how it's made up, I would bet your Mercury is in Gemini. If you want to email me by the site's standards and give me your B-day, day, month and year, I can at least tell you for sure where your moon and ascendant are. Maybe a little more. To cast a whole horoscope, I do it the old fashioned way. It's not expensive to get a computer one, but they don't get too personal or accurate. The parts about explaining you are by computer too, a "real" person isn't reading the chart for you. I could look up a site for you. The books I learned from turned into the computer text for interpretation for computer generated charts. Robert Pelletier, I believe. I don't know Chinese Astrology. I see Jewels has also answered. She does things differently than I do, but is very good. Jean

Until you are about 55 your traits are those of your rising sign (ascendant) Around 55 you will be like Cancer. Our sun sign is what we strive to be

    Trust me ....
ZODIAC SIGN ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH to predict anything about anyone...

And both Jewels and myself are talking about your Natal horoscope, which is a pic of the sky the time you were born. If we take the Natal chart and put today's planetary positions, you have a progressed chart.

You are not your sun sign ........ you are a collection of planets, degrees, aspects and all these other facts that contribute to your overall personality. Cancer's are sensitive, even so if you feel like a Cancer perhaps there are other factors contributing to your personality like your moon and venus. Run a natal chart, if you don't know what that is I wrote a hub called What is Astrology Anyway? Part 2 Houses Natal Charts and Conclusions
