   Why do so many believe in the concept of a god?
   
   When there is no god and the concept of a god is purely a control mechanism, why do so many still believe in it?

   I can't figure out any other way the world and everything in it was created. Also, when I behave like a good Christian, my lifes runs much more smoothly.

   Many assert that organized religion is nothing more than a "control mechanism", but I don't know that I've ever heard anyone suggest the very concept of God to be a "control mechanism" . . . are you suggesting that some village dweller at the beginning of civilization invented the notion that there was an invisible 'boss' so as to control his neighbors?

   There is a God......and belief in God is not a control mechanism.  He is very real and is shown everywhere in creation.  I serve the King of Kings, Jesus Christ!!

   Yes Mickey, that's what it's all about - he's a control mechanism used to control your family, those around you and those up the street. Look at how it has been used and still is. I'm not suggesting that it's all bad, just a way to control people, to make them do what you want.
   
   Emily, if you are happy with that then great, I would never mock you for it, and if it continues to make you happy in your life then I wish you all the best. But whatever we do, the world will end in about 5 billion years. Please explain that?
   
   Cobrien, as long as you are comfortable with your beliefs, then hey, good on you.
   
   lobobrandon, if it gives you peace then it's no worry. But I prefer my reality.

   Because of the philosophical gain of believing in a God. If you die, there are four different possibilities.
   1. Nothing happens. So there is just nothing.
   2. Rebirth. A continous cycle of life.
   3. There is Heaven.
   4. There is Hell.
   With this in mind, no matter what you do, there is something bad headed for you after you die. But if you believe in God, you have a one in four chance of having a good afterlife.
   Also believing in God helps you socially, health-wise, spirituality, and personally.

   Mankind wanted answers to why things happen and what certain things were. We cause things to happen so in our primitive beginnings we jumped to the conclusion that natural phenomena were caused by someone too. Earthquakes were gods shaking the earth, comets were chariots or dragons or some other sky-god entity. Most all gods including Jesus were born of virgins, healed the sick, and were resurrected. Osiris, Dionysus, Quetzalcoatl and dozens of others. The delusion of gods and the afterlife persists because of man's natural fear of death and the unknown. As a human being with a highly evolved brain, we can't think of not existing since we do. So tribe elders and pharaohs began ceremonies to the gods to ensure their afterlife. A short time later everyone was able to live forever through an afterlife because that idea created a more harmonious society. A society who would follow without thinking and a society who wouldn't revolt against its leader as quickly.  We are still a very young species with a lot of growing up to do and a lot of primitive thinking to leave behind. Science and growing evidence shows there is indeed no god of any sort whatsoever, for that I am very happy and thankful.
