Are Christians and Jews blinded from the truth?

I am from the South and like everyone else down here, 90% of us anyway, I have always gone to a Baptist church. About 10 years back I started studying the bible, not just reading it but studying everything I read. As I started learning more knowledge I became aware that many of the doctrines that I have been taught are not laws in the bible. They may be improper conduct (immoral) but are not sins. I was told by some in the church that one could not be open minded and should only follow what is taught in the church. But that is not what the wisdo

You've taken a step into a much bigger world my friend!  You have to be very careful.  The scriptures are clear that there will be many false prophets and teachers that claim to be of the Father.  There really was no "Christian" religion until Rome decreed it.  The apostle Paul was not a Christian or a Jew, he was a "Follower of the Messiah" of the "Hebrew" bloodline.  1 Corinthians 9:19 states "I have become all things to all men, so that by all possible means I might save some".  That means that the process and practice were intended to cause the unknowing and unbelieving to come into contact with the Father YHWY, by way of the scriptures.  Today, many churches have the  process and practice down, but don't celebrate the reason that the practices have been made to occur in the first place.  2 Timothy 2:15 says "Study to show thyself approved".  You keep doing that brother and leave ANY church that does not do what Paul did.  It's all about the Father and knowing Him by way of the scriptures.

Well said Elder, I believe study is the key to understanding and bringing one closer to the Lord.

This is so true. Christian was supposed to be a derogatory name, but now it is not. We must be watchful of deception by those who glorify themselves and their opinions above what God reveals

Some are but not all. Some willingly deny the truth in favor of not having to act on new knowledge. God is a God of action and not one of complacency and manmade tradition. He does not hold to creeds made in councils of men or dogma voted on by well meaning people.

We should measure all doctrine taught at church by scripture and then take the matter to God for clarification after we have studied it out in our minds. It is a foolproof way to know the truth about all things by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We must do so in faith and with real intent to act on what God reveals.

Continue to study the scriptures as Jesus said in John's gospel that the father Himself would teach us. It is true that many Church doctrines are not biblical. As you study scripture you will begin to see where the Church is in error.

I would also recommend studying Judaism as it is our parent religion and its interpretations of the bible are often very different to the Church's on many issues. Remember that the disciples were Jewish and that the gentile converts incorporated many pagan ideas into Christianity.

Continue to search the scriptures and trust God to lead you in all truth. Keep your open mind, it is absolutely vital.

We also have to remember that "Religion" is a creation of men.  Judaism didn't exist until the Sanhedrin or the Pharisees.  The Pharisees were basically academics that studied the work of the prophets and the scriptures after Malachi(300 yr silence).

There are many healthy churches out there that encourage this. Find one and get plugged in.

In answer to your question, unfortunately, many Christians are so ingrained in dogma that is not based on Scripture that they miss the truth.

In the Amish community, they have the idea of fences. These fences are rules that the community holds to keep one another in community. What they don't realize is that these fences also keep others out and keep them away from God.

We are called to seek. Continue seeking and you will never be blinded from the truth.

I say that I agree and vote up this answer. God does not put up fences men do. God gives us knowledge and gives us the opportunity to use it or cage it. I pray that I don't allow my witness to get caged by fear and prejudice further than it is.

You will find the truth within yourself.  The scriptures are a guide and they guide you inward.  The kingdom of your heaven is within.  As Jesus taught, follow him, meaning do as he did and you will walk a path of truth.  Be careful not to look externally for gratifications and truth.  An external God is a false one.  When the truth is taught by men it is masked by the interpretations of men.  When you apply the teachings to yourself, you will understand.  Don't have beliefs, have experiences.
