How can a pastor like me make my church members to love me?

If my church members love me, they will obey me and leading them will be easier for me

Be real with them and do not preach anything as a command that is not clearly proven in Scripture. Realize that not all your church members will love you, or even like you. Some may even despise you. That's just a fact of ministry.

As to your mention of obeying you, I have serious problems with any pastor who feels he must regularly remind the congregation to "obey him." You are to be a leader and example, but not a dictator or king over the people. Most people (at least here in the US) will not tolerate this behavior for long and will leave. Also, remember that tradition is NOT the most important practice to uphold. Tradition will strangle a church.

thank you so much for this answer, I agree a pastor must not lord it over the congregation...I just believe that there must be a level of cooperation or agreement between the pastor and church members or the  work of God may suffer

Agreed. Hey if I'm ever in Nigeria, I'll have to remember to stop by your church!  smile

YOU have no place as a Christian leader, YOU are disqualified by YOUR statements.  YOUR church, obey YOU, easier for YOU to LEAD them ( into YOUR error).  YOU are "lording it over them" which completely disqualifies YOU.  YOU are  a hireling

And you, celafoe, are a mean-spirited person. No need to use such unjustifiably bitter words. You're practically throwing a fit like a three year old. Are you unable to state your disagreement without going into a tirade?

      >Caleb- There is nothing mean spirited about celafoe's comment. And evidently you don't understand celafoe point. Cute Edge Question and his comments is typical of those pastor's who RULE over THEIR church as if the own it.
      Celafoe I agree with y

You can't possibly know how this man lives simply by one question he posts. What we CAN know is that it's possible to get your point across without blasting someone like YOU are The Lord in Heaven. Agreed?

Caleb- No, like you I checked his profile and other Hub's. False doctrine like most other churches out there. So he is no different than any of the other greedy pastors.

caleb-- no tirade, no bad spirit  but you do not understand scripture any better than he does.  you both need to read James and Timothy..  his methods are not those of the true church, they are contrary to new testament teaching

Whatever you may say, you DO have a bad spirit about it...

you might want to read my hub on the servitude of Christian leadership, and the  church leadership instructions in the new testament instead of following what the churches of men say is the church structure for the new testament.
their structure follows the pattern of the defunct tabernacle of the old testament  but not the new testament instructions and example.
Also note , if you are really a Minister of Jesus the Christ, you are not called to make them love you, you are called to bring scripture truth.

2 Tim 4:1-5   I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
    NKJV
I would also note that the true church belongs to Jesus not to any man.   If it is "your" church then that means it is not His.
Ministry of the Gospel serve His people to bring them into HIS Kingdom, not the kingdoms of men and their buildings and projects.

      caleb--  words are important.
thats what  "pastors" of the churches of men are taught and believe
      Luke 6:45
For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

I assume that you are a hireling that is trying to justify your position in the modern “church” to please man by wanting them to love you.

Salaried to serve is an oxymoron.

Freely you receive, freely give. The Bible never says that we should make professional careers of the Gospel and the gifts God has given us. The cause of so much corruption and disfigurement within the church is man freely giving control over to other human beings to think for them.

Instead of trying to get your members to love you, fear God instead. Quit your job as a hireling and go find a meaningful occupation that does not require extortion to bilk others of their hard earned money. Every time you get upon your podium and say, “Let us continue to worship God in the giving of our tithes and offerings,” you are extorting others by using your official professional clergy position to twist Scripture to obtain money from them. Do what the many other volunteers do and serve the body of Christ without salary. They truly understand that their reward is in heaven, not from the accolades of man.

In 1 Thessalonians 2, Paul talks about his real work where he worked both day and night making tents. On top of all of this, he found time to preach the Good News. He did all this so the Church would not have to pay a cent while he ministered to others. What a contrast to the modern “pastor” who requires a paid platform to trickle the ears of their pew warming minions. The Apostle Paul never equated preaching the Gospel with “work.”

The “offering” that is used to support the professional hireling and his family is not authorized in the New Testament. In fact, it is plainly condemned. You will find nowhere that the “offering” is part of a “church worship service” where a large part of the money goes to the profit of the “pastor” and the building overhead.

When the "church" pays someone to teach and preach, it is a burden. To be blunt, the hireling is a “fungus” that dwarfs the spiritual growth of the Church.

Everyone wants to make for themselves a career that rides on the coat tails of the “Gospel” because it comes with so many perks and benefits. The truth is, they will get their earthly rewards, but because they have done it without self-sacrifice, they will be denied access to God’s kingdom for doing so.

If you continue within this worldly system you will be embraced with the accolades of man and enabled to set up your own kingdom within it, but it is not God's Kingdom.

we are only answering YOUR question with scriptural help.   If you are truly  called of God and are willing to stop following men & serve and follow Him, I will be happy to help you but you must start over and follow scripture

First, If you are trying to make your church love you, then you have no business being a paster. Second. The true Church does not belong to you. And you can not MAKE it do anything much less love you. Third, your thoughts are typical of man made churches.

I would suggest if you have a true heart for God that you really study the word of God and start all over again.

thank you sir. Firstly you are saying that  teaching the congregation to love their the pastor(shepherd) makes the pastor a misfit as he is excluded from benefiting from God's instruction to be loved (love your neighbour as yourself)? you know d word

    2. profile image53
graceinusposted 10 years agoin reply to this

Cute Edge- You are the same as everyone else " a neighbour". As such you should be loved as the commandment goes. I could care less about your position ( or anyone elses) as "pastor". It's not going to MAKE someone love you any more or less.

cute- no, he is saying assuming the role of pastor (priest)  and structure of the temple which was done away with at the cross is error.    A sign of being a part of the apostate "church of man" church system, which God detests. clergy/laity system
