Lake Lanier GA: Bring Your Boat or Jet Ski, or Head to Lake Lanier Islands Park Near Atlanta For Water Fun...

Updated on March 24, 2011

Atlanta's Lake Lanier...

During a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than to spend a few hours on the water in your boat or Jet Ski, or maybe just at a beach on your local lake… The City of Atlanta Georgia area has a very popular lake less than an hour north of the city, called Lake Lanier. This is a huge reservoir that was created to store up water for use by the cities and towns that normally take it from the Chattahoochee River that flows south through Atlanta. It’s the most popular lake around and people from all over come and bring their boats, go to the Lake Lanier Islands Water Park, or just head to one of the beaches…

This is a heavily used lake, since the population of the area is very large just as you would expect from the unofficial “capitol of the south”! There are really only two recreational lakes to the north of the city of Atlanta, and the other one is Lake Allatoona. Both are great for cooling off during the summer, but Lake Lanier is much bigger. There are many marinas and boat ramps all around the lake, and you can purchase a waterproof lake map before you go if you need to find one for your boat. In some places there can be quite a distance from shore to shore, so it’s good to be prepared! It can be very easy to get lost out on the lake, as every cove starts to look like the next one after a while, so make sure to get that map if you want to do some exploring…

Lake Lanier Islands...

There are many fantastic things to do out at the lake, including the incredible Lake Lanier Islands Water Park. There are only two water parks in the Atlanta area, the other being the Six Flags White Water Park in Marietta, but I think that the one in Lake Lanier is much better. It’s in a more natural location right off a cove at the lake, and it’s a popular and fun way to spend a hot day! There are many great slides and raft rides in addition to a lazy river where you just relax and float along… If you get a chance, give this park a try, it might soon be one of your favorites!

The Lake Lanier Islands Resort area is also very popular for an extended stay, and there are some great hotel rooms, cabins, and even camping available there. If you are into golf, you can enjoy some great rounds right at the water’s edge at the resort, and the view is awesome! You can also go horseback riding here, and there are plenty of riding trails you’re sure to enjoy…

Lake Lanier Houseboats...

Right next to the Lake Lanier Islands is one of the largest marinas at the lake, and you can rent boats, jet skis, or even houseboats! This is a very popular option for the lake, renting a large, luxury houseboat for a day that comes with its own captain and catering service, or possibly rent one for a weekend or even a week… The lake is definitely big enough to spend a few days exploring the many nooks and coves, and these luxury houseboats may surprise you with the many cabins and living areas onboard. Some of the bigger ones can have 5 or 6 cabins, a huge modern kitchen, a living room that may rival yours at home, and up to 3 decks! They may have the top deck totally devoted to a lounge and/or barbecue area, with a slide down to the water… It can be very fun!

Lake Lanier is very popular during the summer, so if you are planning on spending some time here make sure to book any boat, Jet Ski, or houseboat rentals ahead of time so as not to be disappointed. There are many great beaches with lifeguards that you can also head to for free, if you just want to spend a little time de-stressing from the hustle and bustle of the world. Have fun at Lake Lanier!
