Fastfreta interviews BkCreative
A native New Yorker shares her love of writing and socializing with other writers
Since joining HubPages back in May 2009, I have found a host of very good writers on the site that I admire and try to emulate. One of those writers happens to be BkCreative. I am delighted to learn a little more about her, and this interview hopefully will shed a little more insight into what makes a great writer such as Bk.
Thank you Bk for agreeing to the interview. I’ve known and admired you since I first came to HubPages. I have especially enjoyed your hubs on anything dealing with health and the body. So basically I’d like to explore that aspect of your writing.
1. It appears that you are very health conscious, from the topics that you write about. Am I correction in my assumption?
Yes, you are correct, fastfreta. I cannot imagine getting older and being disabled because of poor food choices. We are taught that getting older means chronic diseases - this is not true! I'm not a fanatic though - we are all responsible for our choices - but I do feel we have a responsibility to be 'food aware' for the benefit of all children. They are suffering chronic ailments from poor quality nutrition - and we let it happen.
2. Have you always been that way or is this a new trend for you?
I've been this way since the 60's when we became aware of the industrialization of our food. Of course when we demanded better quality foods - we were called 'health nuts.' But my parents made sure we ate properly and I felt my darling children deserved a good healthy start in life, too. Before then food was pretty safe.
3. Your hub Food Banned In Europe, Why Not In America? was very intriguing, and one of my favorites. It is listed as a hot hub of yours. What enticed you to write it?
You know, that is actually just a hint of how bad our food supply is. That was just a short hub - done for 'food awareness' because I know other hubbers will add great comments, or benefit from the information and share it. I've lived abroad and traveled extensively - I don't think anyone eats the garbage that is sold to Americans as food.
4. Just to switch gears a bit, I didn’t get much information from your profile, so I won’t delve too deeply into your personal life. However I noticed that you live in Brooklyn. Have you ever lived anywhere else; if so, where?
I'm what you call a Native New Yorker. Yes, I was born here in NYC in Harlem Hospital because my parents made Harlem their home during the Harlem Renaissance. I've live in every borough since, but raised my children in a NYC suburb.
5. Your writing is superb. Are you a writer by profession?
By profession I am a high school English teacher and started teaching in NYC public schools in 1987. Great fun! But, I got tired of always being near poverty so I spent about 3 years as a proofreader, and then in 2004 I participated in a Teacher Exchange program; off and on over a four year period I taught English in Seoul, S. Korea - and enjoyed some of the best years of my life. Now, I sometimes work as a sub and can truly call myself a freelance writer.
6. Speaking of writing, how did you come to write at HubPages?
I think it was an ad on craigslist. I was looking for some freelance writing assignments (I had found one a couple years before, and did a bit of writing for an ezine). The ad made it all seems so possible, so easy - and it really has been.
7. Do you write for any other sites? If so, how do they compare to HubPages?
I do some content writing but that is so different from HubPages. You write it - you sell it - it's gone - yes, they pay you but there is nothing like the passive income I get from HubPages. Let me repeat that - there is nothing like passive income and I know on the 24th of next month I will have a deposit in my checking account. And the community - how else would I have met you, fastfreta? I need a writing community because writing isolates me. I suspect so much time alone without being able to communicate with other writers would make me kind of nutty. And where else can I meet writers from all over the world? HubPages has been very good to me and allows me to remain creative.
8. I noticed from your profile that you listed reading and writing as something that you enjoy. Do you have any other hobbies?
Writing has always been big - from childhood. I have sold articles to many magazines in the past. But I love to travel, too. During my years as a full time teacher, whenever I had a week off, I'd grab a bag and get to the airport. I travel alone. I've been to Senegal, Morocco, Singapore, Malaysia, Greece, Paris many times and all over the British Isles, to China, Thailand, Venezuela, Amsterdam, etc. People are incredibly kind and giving, all over the world.
9. Back to HubPages, I am so addicted to this site and find every aspect of it enjoyable, but especially the hubs and comments that follow. I have only recently begun to explore other areas such as the Forums, Answers etc. Is there a particular area of the site that intrigues you the most? If so, what?
You know, it's still the Hubbers. I spend no less than an hour each a.m. checking out all the new hubs from writers I follow, often responding, and then checking comments on my hubs which I always respond to. Lot of hilarious stuff right there - we've become friendly. It's all part of the fun and the sense of community. Then I check again at night!
10. Finally, since you are a veteran of HubPages, is there some advice that you would offer to some that’s just joined, maybe looking to improve their writing skills or just their overall participation in HubPages?
Certainly: participate. Like in checking out the hubs by others and responding to comments left on your hub - you'll learn a lot. And above all, write about who and what you are. Nothing is worse than reading a hub (or an article written anywhere) by someone who is simply parroting something they read somewhere. You can always tell and often it is inaccurate.
Thank you BkCreative for sharing this bit of insight into your life as a hubber. Please continue to enlighten us with your very creative writing.
- Thank you too, fastfreta. I have a feeling we will somehow come across each other somewhere out there in the world - and even though we've never met, we'd know each other - immediately. And then have a lot of fun!
To the Hubbing community if you’ve not checked out this very creative writer, you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t. If you have any interest at all in your health, BK is the one to check out.
