You are mad to get any dog with an 18mth child. If the child gets dog crap in its eyes, it will go blind. If the dog gets jealous of the child (very likely), the child is in severe danger

The best kid dog we ever had was when my kids were young. We got them a female white german shepherd mix. She was a pup, so basically had no issues yet. She grew faster than they did, of course, but by the time they were 2 and 5, she was corraling them and nudging them to where they should be, just as if they were her sheep. If I would call one of my kids, she would go get them and bring them to me. She guarded them like she was their mother. We lived in the country- they were all sitting on the side of the hill- she was with them, of course, but a rattlesnake got too close- she attacked and killed it to keep it away from them. Our poor Elizabeth (a queen's name, because she was one!) was in the hospital for over a week, because the rattlesnake bite was too severe. We thought she was going to die, but luckily came out okay! My kids loved that dog and she loved them. They would lay on her and fall asleep. We were lucky enough to have her for 12 years. She was the best!  Think shepherds are the best and I also think that because she was a female, she had that mother instinct.
