If you have the dog spayed/neutered or get one that is already altered, the gender isn't as noticeable in their behavior. If you are getting a dog that is unaltered then you need to figure out if you want to deal with puppies.
Also, the CDC and the AVMA both say that most dogs that attack unprovoked are unaltered male dogs. So if you don't want to neuter the dog and you want the ability to breed then you are better off going with a female.
