Staring Chihuahua

   Okay, I have two four year old Chihuahuas.  These are the first small dogs I've owned, and they are sure a different breed.  They are such good dogs, and very well behaved, but they have a habit that drives me batty.
   One, in particular stares at me constantly!  They both will do this, but the one is way bad.  I mean, even when she's outside, I can see her out of the corner of my eye staring through the window.  It is nice she loves me and is so devoted, but, I'm trying to figure out if I encourage it, or is she just obssesive?  My husband thinks it's funny, but it really can be kind of annoying every single day on end.  I hate to get frustrated, but, even trying to give toys, bones, exercise . . .aghh, she's staring right now lol.
   Any suggestions?

      I think it is a good thing. If you watch dog trials, the owners must get the dog to watch them for hand commands. If the dog doesn't watch, they don't know what to do. It seems she is simply watching you so she can follow any instructions you might give. Why not try teaching her some tricks?

   Oh - I've had them since puppies - so maybe I've warped them somehow, but, wondering if any of you know of this in others.

      I know how you feel. I have a basenji that does the same thing! It really drives me crazy because I will get that "feeling" that someone is staring at me and of course it is her!

   That little tiny dog is having way too much fun with your paranoia. Even when she isn't doing anything, she is driving you crazy.  What a powerful dog.  Ignore her. Don't keep such a close eye on her and she won't do it to you.
   I once bought a chi just because even I didn't want one, my spouse did and when we went to look at them, this one little girl sat down in front of me and just looked at me without moving a muscle or making a sound. She just sat there and looked until I talked to her and then she jumped up into my lap. She wanted attention, when I gave it to her she was happy.  I had her for ten years and she followed me around like I was the queen and she was my royal guard. Great dog, loved her like she was the queen and I was her royal guard.  Stop reading so much into it and accept the wonder of the unconditional love of a dog.

   Ahhh - she is getting her attention. 
   That was a perfect response, it's so simple, and makes so much sense when I read it!
   I thought about super gluing her to my side so she would finally be content, but the potty issue gave me second thoughts.  Thanks Beege!

   This is so cute! She sees you as the Alpha dog--therefore she is going to watch you like a hawk to ensure she follows and does the right thing to stay in good with the Alpha dog!

      Very insightful libby!  This is my husbands take on it.
      You see her pic in my profile - is that the face of a sweet baby, or what?  I'm not an overly affectionate, flowery mommy, and I think she craves that sort of attention.  Ah . . . my momma taught me guilt well.
      Now I'm going to have to buy her, and her sis that fluffy bed thingy I saw the other day.

   Probably obsessive alot of owners have that with small dogs because the dog depends on the human so much.

   I think that Chihuahuas are cute.  And they definitely have an interesting take on life.  I don't have one, but I do have a toy poodle, and she is like Velcro by my side.  Although there are many facets of the Canine Good Citizen test that she could pass, the one where you leave the room and your dog must not whine or bark while you are gone -- well she would flunk that part!  It's all my fault, and it all goes back to puppyhood.  Not that she has separation anxiety -- she doesn't!  Because if I leave for 5 hours, she knows I'll be back, and she is fine.  It's knowing that I am in the next room and not with her that seems to be the problem!

   Yeah, I think they both are quite obsessive.
   I try to foster some indepedence;  I have to try and be quiet when they are playing together (which doesn't happen often), cause if they notice me looking, they will stop and focus on me again. 
   Ah well, if nothing else, I've been very important to something in my life, lol.  Just teasing, but they sure do make you feel loved.

    I have two Chi's a long hair and short hair. They are my babies. The short hair does the staring thing. I know she wants attention when she does that. Usually she wants me to pick her up and hold her on my lap. The long hair just stares at things almost like she's in a trance. They're both good dogs, very loyal. That's the pic of my little long hair Chi. She loves having her belly rubbed.

    I have a Chihuahua would follows my every move...you think he is my genetic offspring as he is sooo very attached to me.

    You foster independence by leaving dogs Aline (being not even in the house) and by having them taken out by people other than you. Otherwise you end up with dogs so neurotic they have panic attacks whenever you leave their sight
