"COPYING" - How do you feel about copying another artists work...

Let me clarify "copying" ... I mean using the colours or the subject of one painting and interpreting in into yours. We've all done it...we copy from nature everyday.

So the question is how would you feel about your work being copied?

I have really strong feelings about this.  I believe artist's should own and have respect for the work they produce.  It sad that so little respect is given to artists of all media.

I gave a friend a photograph I had taken of her granddaughter, and without even a word, she photocopied it and was handing it out to family.  It wouldn't have bothered me at all if she had just asked me if I minded.

People don't think about it for some reason and just help themselves--and I think it is wrong.

    Duffsmom,
You have to be an artist to appreciate it, don't you. Your friend wouldn't give it a second thought...she "owns" the subject of the photo so she would assume she has the rights to hand it out.

It's a sensitive topic. For so many students learning to paint, copying can teach some very valuable lessons...that said I have some paintings that I guard very closely, I would furious to find someone had borrowed it.

I must confess, I hadn't given photo's any thought when I posed this question...but it would also apply to all the pirated music and movies around the world too.

    Thank you for your feedback.

By "copying" another artist work. You will in essence become more aware of the type of art your heart truely longs for. As artist we need to learn from one another, help eacher, and teach each other. Inspiration is one thing fraud is another! Haha Great question!

As far as "copying" goes, I think it's fine, but only if you give credit in some way to the orginal artist. I've done multiple master copies for Vermeer, and I did a self-portrait using Dali. As long as you dont copy the original to pass it off as your own, any interpretation you create from that is yours.

Basically, as long as you dont try to take credit for the orginal, and as long as you blatanly advertise "HEY, THIS IS A COPY", I think "copying" is a good overall learning experience.

Well, my professor always used to say, "If someone copies your work, it means that your work & idea is super good"

    Cheers
