How do you focus your camera lens at night for long exposure photography?

At night, for long exposure photography, I have trouble accurately focussing on dark or poorly lit subjects, like a tree in a field. Besides closing down the f-stop to something like 8 or smaller, is there a way to get better focus? I'm shooting with a Canon t3i. Can I use Magic Lantern software to help with focus assist in photo mode, for example?
