Using small size needle for granny square

I have been told by a friend that if I crochet a granny square blanket with 2 size small crochet needle, the "holes" will be very  small. Is it true?

While I haven't done a lot of granny squares, I think that even if you change your hook size, the holes will still be present, just on a different scale. Because it reduces your gauge, the holes will also be smaller. But, if you want the holes to disappear completely, you should look at a different pattern.

you will also get a very tight result and surprisingly your resulting blanket will not be very warm. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it is true. Perhaps you should use another pattern for granny squares. There are plenty of free crochet patterns for different granny squares at Crochet Pattern Central or Ravelry.com
