Is it wrong to encourage drinking and parties involving drinking when many struggle with addiction?

More and more alcoholism destroys lives by death or injury which doesn't include the loss of jobs, drivers licenses etc. families destroyed, careers destroyed and other non drinkers can be affected as well when they or a family member are hit by a drunk driver.

I think that overall having a party that involves alcohol is okay, but I would be careful to assure that it is a party that simple involves alcohol as opposed to pressuring anyone to drink or making drinking the focus of the party.

If you know that you have guests who struggle with alcohol then it might be best to avoid having it at your event, or simply invite them to your next party.  Depending on the situation it could be appropriate to say in advance "hey just so you know, some of my friends don't drink for a variety of reasons, so please make sure that if someone says they don't want a drink you just say okay and move on."  Or something along those lines.

Addicitons of any sort have to be dealt with by those who suffer from the addiction.  The consumption of alcohol is a choice and shouldn't be pushed upon anyone but also shouldn't be condemned because one disagrees with its use.  Responsibile use of this subtance, or any other addictive substance, is the key.  There really isn't any black or white answer to the problem.
