How often should you check your car oil?

I do mine weekly but I have friends that do every month or two. I feel that is too long and a replacement engine is costly.

My hubby checks his engine oil when the starting of the engine starts to choke up, that means thick engine oil needs a new one

I remember my first job was pumping gas back in the early 70's. Part of my job was to check the oil with every fill up. If they were only asking for $5 or $10 then ask them. So, I guess I still follow that rule. I tend to check the oil when I plan to fill my tank. Yet, I only fill my tank every six weeks or so today.

I find that it's generally convenient to check your oil when getting fuel. In most cases you won'y need to add oil but it's a good idea to check your oil regularly, not just for the sake of the oil, but also as an opportunity to spot other problems that are visual such as leaks or rodent activity.
