How would one go about self-promotion?

Considering my social life has recently become null, how would I go about this?

I do it through personal connections and social networking.
I, too, am not a very social person...so I have trouble with Facebook fan pages. I try to rely on my talent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Nevertheless, I still have a Facebook Page for myself, a website, a Tumblr, a Behance, a LinkedIn, a Pinterest, etc etc. The more web presence you have, the more likely you'll show up in Google searches.
Example: just a week ago (not even), I got a random email from someone who said they had Googled "Fahrenheit 451 book cover" and found my design. He liked it so much he wanted to hang it in his basement on canvas at 22x34.
The reason he found this was probably because it was on all of my sites. Whenever I do something I post it EVERYWHERE, so no opportunity is missed.
I'm a graphic design student so perhaps the way I promote is different than for someone of another career, but I think the same ideas are still there.
    Definitely use LinkedIn, though.
And find communities (for me it would be AIGA) that cater to your interests; they might be able to help you network, find jobs, and get your name out there.
Sending emails or calling people you admire that you might be able to talk to and maybe make connections with is another (albeit more tedious) way of getting yourself out there.

I have several networks such as this but I'm no student and I'm really not so lucky as to have anything out there. I cleaned up every profile I have (Linkedin, facebook, deviantart, etc) but my social networks are still lacking.

I wouldn't say I'm socially "booming" because of these networks and really that example was an anomaly but it wouldn't have been possible otherwise. It takes a lot of patience and learning SEO, tagging, keywords, etc.
      Good luck!

Join something. A political group or religious group. Somewhere , where you can express yourself and be enriched by the company of like minded people. Also , if it is romance as goal online works to meet folks ,but be realistic and meet folks you have a chance of seeing in the real( unless you have your own private jet). If it is networking that you are after volunteer in your community in a manner somewhat connected to business interest.

Not for something romantic wink I already have enough romance. I mean basically to just get out there. Example is I have 2 contacts on LinkedIn and only 20 friends on FB.
