Not always, it depends all on your willingness to create product-marketing and selling hubs and then driving traffic to them. It needs a lot of time, patience and skills, and it all depends on luck!

I think some people can although I've barely made a cent so far.

Making real money requires an adequate amount of skill in building up contents and knowledge of Internet Maketing techniques especially SEO (Search Engine Optimization).  Usually the successful ones will have more than one site.

You can read  hubs about SEO and internet marketing.  I found that Hubber Shazwellyn is quite an expert on this.  She is also very helpful as well.  Please go to http://hubpages.com/profile/shazwellyn

    Take care and have fun.

Maybe some one does. But I don't think it is easy.
Making a living only from the adds in the hubs it is practically impossible from most of the people, even the most prolific ones.
You can use your hubs to send traffic to other sites where you sell something, of course. But this is not for me 'making a living writing hubs'. This is just using hubs as a marketing technique.

Absolutely you can. It may take a while, but as long as HubPages is an authority site and you know how to write for the internet on topics that people are looking for then there is no reason why not. the income potential on Hubpages is unlimited right now.

I personally would also diversify my income from more than one site. If one site takes a hit at least you still have income from another site.
