Social media is definitely an effective way to advertise your hubs. I use twitter and facebook and it has a positive effect.
write articles and link back to your hubpages.

As Wire-Zone has said, social media websites are excellent ways of promoting your hubs. Article directories are other great ways of getting attention - such as Digg and StumbleUpon.
Reddit, stumbeupon, digg, buzz.yahoo.com, facebook twitter are very good, but you need a lot of followers.
