Yes. I have had several. It's only bearable if the boss is competent. Even with a competent micro-manager, I wonder why I was hired.
Yes, it is very counter-productive. In order to lead people effectively you rmust let them be autonomous. Just like we teach our children, people need to learn from mistakes they make. If you micro-manage, your staff will eventually wait for you to do something as opposed to doing it them selves. This will result in the loss of all discretionary effort which is vital to running a productive unit. Kevin
It is indeed very counter-productive! You start becoming conscious of what you're doing trying to make sure you don't cross the line or whatever and this of course affects your efficiency, effectivity and productivity!
Agree - it stifles innovation and productivity.
Oh yes, too many. Not much you can do about it except look for another job. I don't think the people prone to that type of management style change very quickly, if at all.
True, there's always the option of getting another job. But with the economy, this is perhaps not the most viable option for everyone. Now I see why it's better to have no one else as your boss - just yourself. This is my goal in the near future.:-)
Working for yourself is not without shortcomings, though it certainly has its advantages! You can select your customers, your hard work benefits your own company rather than a big corp. that doesn't appreciate you and you can set your own hours!

What do you think is the hardest thing about being a boss/manager?I've been a supervisor for over 5 year. I found managing staffing levels one of the hardest things I've had to contend with. For those who are a supervisor or manager, what do you find is the hardest thing to contend with?
