Is it hard to quit a union?

I'm part of a union at work, but not by choice.  In my 15 or so year career there they have never done a thing for me.  There are a lot of false promises.  They keep saying the employees are the union.  If that's true, why am I forced to pay them dues?  We are currently in a contract negotiation and it will result in us losing more benefits and another three years of no raises.  Anyone have any experience in quitting a union?

Sorry for what you're experiencing David.  From what I recall, you just about have to give up the job to shed the union restraints. And even then, you face black balling, etc. I've heard about people in your situation fighting this battle. I don't think it's impossible but, I remember lots of drama and disappointment. If it's a struggle you're mad enough and ready to fight for, definitely arm yourself with good counsel. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for any current or past cases.
