Features HubPages Should Add - Help for Writers

Updated on December 29, 2014

What Should HubPages Add?

HubPages is a great place at which to write, but I think they should add some more features to further enhance the writing--and reading--experience. Sure, HubPages has a lot of nice features, but there are some things I've noticed--as have other hubbers--that just need to be added in order to make things run more smoothly or make more sense. Here are several.

The current HubPages voting tabs

More Voting Tabs at End of Hub

I really wish HubPages would add more voting options at the end of a hub. How many times do you read a recipe hub and want to click on "delicious"? Or what about "refreshing," whether for a recipe hub or any hub that gives you a breath of fresh air? A reader once told me that she would have chosen "refreshing" for my hub if there were such a choice. That word choice made me feel great! "Unique" would be an excellent addition, as would "excellent." And there are some hubs that are just freaking adorable. Why not add "adorable" as a choice? And "insightful" or "brilliant"? Someone else recently said she wanted to click on "super cute."

Okay, maybe that would be too many to add all of those, but couldn't we add a few more than the five--useful, funny, awesome, beautiful, interesting--that we have? Those voting tabs just don't seem to be enough to cover the whole gamut of emotions that hit us after reading a hub. Speaking of emotions, what about "touching"? Also, since this site depends on writing, what about adding the option of "well-written" or "perfect grammar." Okay, those options may take up too much room, but you see what I mean. Readers need more options to really be able to express themselves!

Like button or thumbs up button?
Like button or thumbs up button? | Source

Like Button similar to Facebook

Do you ever read another hubber's comment on either your hub or another's hub and wish you could just click on "like" as you do on Facebook? If that were an option, then we could show our support on the comments we read. This would reflect our interest as well as show that people are actually reading the comments. I think this feature would enhance the commenting venue.

Show Number of Hubbers Following

Follow (598) Victoria Lynn

I have actually asked this in the forums. We can easily see how many followers we have on HubPages by looking at the number up to the left of our name and profile picture. However, there is no such place that shows the number of people that we are following ourselves. The only way to know is to go to your account and look under "people I'm following" and manually count them. What a pain. It would be nice to keep up with that number, so that when it got too large, it would alert a hubber to go look at the list to see if there were any who needed to be deleted, such as hubbers who are no longer active in the community. Following others just for the sake of following doesn't do anything for us, and it's easy to lose sight of all the hubbers we're following.

Update: This feature has been added! Woo hoo!

Bring Back the Suggested Tags Feature

What happened to the "tags" feature? I found the "suggested tags" feature to be very helpful when editing a hub. You know, that's the option to the right where you also see "reorder," "settings," "summary," "group," and "help." This feature was helpful at offering up suggestions for tags to add to attract readers. A month of so ago, this helpful little feature disappeared. I mean, it is still there, but it doesn't give any suggestions when clicked on. It's a challenge to think of all the tags that might be helpful for a search. HubPages really needs to bring back the suggested tags feature! Where did it go?

More HubPages features to add?

I'm sure there are more features that I would wish for HubPages to add, but I can't think of any right now. So I guess that's not too bad to just have four on my wish list. They are important ones, though, I think. What about you? Do you have some additional features you would like added that I haven't mentioned? If so, please share below in the comment section. If your wish coincides with one I've thought about before, I'll add it to my own list..if you don't mind. Maybe the HubPages' powers-that-be will read my suggestions and your comments...and listen to us. If not, that's also added to my wish list...that they DO read our suggestions and listen to us. Maybe in time. I'm content for now. I won't raise too much of a fuss.

Great suggestions all around. I agree with you that adding extra buttons, including a "like" feature would be awesome. Sometimes I just want to click "like" and don't have a whole lot else to add. Number of hubbers that you are following is much needed, too. I have no idea why that number isn't posted the way the followers are.

UnnamedHarald--I wonder if they would not count your own views if you go to your account and click on edit instead on the hub itself. Then you can look at your hub and edit if you want. I don't know if that is counted as a view. I've always wondered that. Thanks for commenting and voting!

Great hub, but I see that's already been said. It bears repeating. I agree with all your suggestions, but, I'd also like to see them not count the times I view my own hubs-- sometimes I find myself not rereading my hubs too often because I don't want to dilute the meaningful count of visitors to my hubs. Thanks for writing this. Voted up and useful.

Very inspiring hub. I do agree with there are many options for us to choose the buttons at the end of hub, though five buttons are enough for me (useful, funny, awesome, beautiful, interesting). I hope we can give the best to this site. I believe that many people love HubPages. Good job, Victoria. Rated up!

My unpublished hubs are all over the place. I've found that even though they have yet to be published, their hub score can still change, and they are all mixed in among my published hubs, according to their current "score."

I am in support of adding additional voting tabs, removing the voting down tab and bringing back the suggested tag feature. I also agree with posting how many hubbers you are following and if they are currently active. After posting your hub, Hubpages may be already on top of this and we may be surprised to see new features this spring. I like the suggestion of a possible photo gallery for hubbers. Voted up and useful!

I have also written a hub about what I would like changed on HP, but no staff member has gotten a chance to read it. It turns out that there is a forum that houses these, and a couple of my requests were made on there and have been implemented. I think asking for the number of people we are following should be an easy thing for them to implement.

It would be nice to see which people are voting up our hubs, even if they don't want to take the time to write a comment.

I didn't notice the tag suggestions were missing until I read it somewhere, but I did use it when I had it, and it was helpful. I don't know why it was removed, but I would like it back too.

I think it would be nice to have a "Humor" category under Literature/Writing; and one we have discussed elsewhere, namely better software for assigning "Related Hubs" so that they are actually in sync with the topics of the Hub.

    • DzyMsLizzy profile image

You must be a mind reader! I was thinking along these exact lines myself. How often, I've left a comment on a recipe bemoaning the lack of a "delicious" button.

How often I've wished for a "like" button next to the comments!

And yes, I, too, miss the "suggested tags" feature. On my side, it's not even still there and non-functional. It's just plain gone.

Well done, good ideas! Voted up across the board and shared.

    • FloraBreenRobison profile image

      FloraBreenRobison 5 years ago

I miss the suggested tags feature too. I add tags myself, but sometimes I am not sure what tags to add besides things like "poem" when I write poetry. As such, I think all my acrostic poems have my own acrostic poems as the related hubs. I'm not sure our own hubs are supposed to be the related hubs on the side of our hubs. I think they are supposed to be those of other hubbers who have written similar hubs, and I know I am not the only person writing acrostic poems.

I *think* I am following 60-65 hubbers, but yes I don't actually know and it is annoying having to count them. I love that they added the "recent hubs" button so that you can find out if the people you follow have written a new hub without going to your home page. For people who follow more than I do, it is a big hassle trying to figure out who are no longer active.

I wish there was a way to look at all the hubs you have that you are working on, not yet published, so that you wouldn't have to go through the who page of all your hubs to get to them. I know they are in another colour than your published hubs, but since the scores will go up or down automatically through some computer bot, you have to go through your whole list to find them. It's not a big deal for people who have about 30 hubs. But what about the hubbers who have been hear for years and have over 1,000 hubs? How tedious to have to scroll down to find 1 hub in 1,000.

Susan: I'd like to see them actually *remove* the vote down button as I think it is no longer practical with our domains. Votes down don't affect score much, and honestly, I am not sure my ego wants to know people are voting my hubs down.

I too miss that tags feature and wish they'd bring it back. I would like to be able to see how many votes down a hub receives. Not for the public to see but for the author to see. It would be way easier if we had a total count of how many people we follow. Not sure if the thumbs up button would work since we already have a vote up button.
