I've been writing for Hubpages for over 3 years, although I've only got serious about writing with this site about 6 months ago. And yes, I do make money on Hubpages. It's not enough to pay my rent, but it's nice to have some play money.

I started out on Hubpages writing poetry. I love poetry and I was excited to finally have somewhere to publish it. I also like writing short stories, and I published a few of those as well. The Hubpages community is great and I received many wonderful comments from fellow Hubbers. But, I learned pretty early on that poetry and short stories do not make money on Hubpages.

What does make money on Hubpages are things that people will always be searching for, called evergreen topics. Topics that are considered evergreen would be things such as health, pregnancy, and cooking related articles.

Once you find a topic, research your competition. If you're writing a hub about 'how to make your own laundry soap' then search for that on Google. Read the first couple of pages of Google's search results, these are the articles you have to beat out for the number one spot. If you don't think you can write a better article than what's already there, than don't. Your article must be concise, entertaining, and contain good grammar. Also the longer it is the better of a chance you have of it entering the coveted number one spot. Just be careful to fill it with good quality writing, not a bunch of garbage because Google won't be fooled. This is a good way to ensure that you'll make money with Hubpages.

Many writers here on Hubpages are great writers but they aren't making any money. This is because they don't understand how to use keywords. Keywords are words or phrases that someone searches for online. If someone was searching for 'how to hand-wash clothes' Google would than pull up articles that had those keywords. You want to use good keywords, and use them often in your articles. That is a biggie when it comes to how to make money on Hubpages, because you never will if you can't be found in search engines. To make money on Hubpages you need to take advantage of all the tools the site provides you. Use as many good pictures as you can that are related to your content, and remember to add captions to them that go with your topic. Always make sure you list the source of your photos.

This is another way to make money on Hubpages. You can add one or both of the capsules and if someone buys one of the products you listed, than you make money from it. Make sure that the items you are listing are relevant to your topic. If someone came to your page to read about guinea pigs they probably aren't interested in buying hot rollers, but they probably would be interested in buying guinea pig toys.

If you can you should definitely add a poll. Even if you just ask a question such as "Did you find this article helpful?", you should always have one.

Making money on Hupbages is not an over-night thing. It will take some time and as you can see a lot of hard work and research. But, if you are serious about making a living writing it is possible.
