There are a lot parasites on the net exploiting the labour and talents of contributors, the freeloading Ezines who pay nothing top the list.
As Wry says, backlinks are so valuable to webmasters, many of them write articles for Ezines, just to be able to include one or two backlinks in the text. In fact, backlinks are so valuable, many webmasters actually pay writers to write the articles for them, and sometimes even pay the Ezine to accept their article! It's called article marketing.
Google doesn't like sites that exist purely for article marketing and have been trying to downgrade them, which makes backlinks on those sites far less valuable. But there are still plenty of website owners who are reading old advice and as long as there are website owners out there still looking for Ezines to post on, they'll survive.
