I think being able to send private messages to other users would be a great feature. I have followers who joined HubPages just to follow my content, and I would like to be able to contact them directly, but since they don't have hubs posted this is difficult.

We do not need HP cluttered up with profiles of people who will never write. Go to blogspot and start a blog to communicate with your people.

Actually, you can leave a message in the comments section on someone's Hub and carry on a conversation there.  Lots of people do that.

"I think being able to send private messages to other users would be a great feature."

I would think by his sentence above that that would not be the feature he was looking for as he wrote "private msg."

If they have an HP account, then you can send them fanmail.
Here is the general format for fanmail URLs (or click fanmail on the profile).
      http://HPUsernameHERE.hubpages.com/#email

Users who want to accept email can opt to turn that feature on, and it will show up on their profiles.  People who do not want to be spammed by strangers have most likely have opted to turn that feature off.

From your feed page, http://hubpages.com/feed/ , you can post status messages and followers will get them if they happen to look at their feed pages.

But you can't turn yourself into a mailing list here.  That's not the point.

Thank you Relache for commenting, as you are an experienced hubber. What I don't want to open my email up to the few thousand viewers a day I have because that will bring in a lot of spam. BUT would love to communicate with the people who have created profiles simply to communicate with me. They do not wish to write hubs, but want to comment on hubs, and have conversations. There is no way for me to currently give them my E0mail without posting it to the word, and that is why I wish for a private message section on HubPages.

There is no real incentive for HubPages to cater for members who don't write Hubs.  The vast majority of the site's income comes from visitors from outside HubPages.

As Relache says, you can already send a private message to members IF they have chosen to allow that feature.  Go to the person's profile, click on Fan Mail and you'll see the link to send a message in the top right hand corner of the fan mail screen.

          + 1

It's already a good service as it stands.  I have had very few spammers during the last 4.5 years from providing that access to others.  Personally, I believe 'new' members should be more concerned with having a realistic bio, avatar and some well written hubs on board... after all, gaining credibility would then perhaps provide a more realistic reason for others to make contact with that member wouldn't it?

I agree, it would be nice to be able to have contact without having to give out your private email. You'd either have to never respond to any emails or respond to all and hope there are no crazies out there. One crazy and all of the sudden you have to get a new email account and notify everyone in your address book. Or... you could just be really antisocial and talk to no one at all.

Personally, I would love an inbox mail system like on FB and if you're not interested, you could close down incoming from everyone or just certain users.

I s'pose, like some have said, you could have a 2nd email account just for HPs, but after a while it get's a bit convoluted and you'd have to have 2 different browsers open or just keep checking an alternate email. Ugh.

I don't see what's so complicated about associating your HP account with an email account you don't use for important or personal business.

People who email you via the contact link on your profile page can't see your email address unless you reply to their message from the receiving account. So there's not really any danger if you have it linked to an important email account.  All you have to do is never reply from that account.  Copy the message and always send a reply from a junk mail account.

Well, not that this is a big deal... we're just talking possibilities here so I spose we might have different wishes.

It's a personal thing. When I'm on the comp. I have FB scrabble open (Tab 1), Email (tab2) HP's (tab 3), FB non scrabble (tab 4) and then usually 2 or 3 additional tabs having to do with gathering information etc. Then at the bottom, I have word open. It's annoying to have an additional email account. I had 2 for years and I was always signing on and off of one to get to the other. Let alone the fact that my kids and I share the comp. so I have to sign off for them to sign on. It would just be nice if HPs were a little more all inclusive. I'm not saying they should have to, or that there is no other possible way, Im just saying, I personally would enjoy it.

In addition, you may reply to someone's email more than once before they turn a little spooky on ya. Sometimes they're friendly and normal at first, then by the third email, you're wondering how much you're going to regret having responded the first time.

But, I thought you were taking a leave-of-absence from HP to spend time with your kids before they all leave home.

No.  It's what you posted on the Forum.  You said good bye to everyone and even Robin E. wished you well on your vacation from HP.
