I think being able to send private messages to other users would be a great feature. I have followers who joined HubPages just to follow my content, and I would like to be able to contact them directly, but since they don't have hubs posted this is difficult.
We do not need HP cluttered up with profiles of people who will never write. Go to blogspot and start a blog to communicate with your people.
Actually, you can leave a message in the comments section on someone's Hub and carry on a conversation there. Lots of people do that.
If they have an HP account, then you can send them fanmail.
Here is the general format for fanmail URLs (or click fanmail on the profile).
http://HPUsernameHERE.hubpages.com/#email
Users who want to accept email can opt to turn that feature on, and it will show up on their profiles. People who do not want to be spammed by strangers have most likely have opted to turn that feature off.
From your feed page, http://hubpages.com/feed/ , you can post status messages and followers will get them if they happen to look at their feed pages.
But you can't turn yourself into a mailing list here. That's not the point.
Thank you Relache for commenting, as you are an experienced hubber. What I don't want to open my email up to the few thousand viewers a day I have because that will bring in a lot of spam. BUT would love to communicate with the people who have created profiles simply to communicate with me. They do not wish to write hubs, but want to comment on hubs, and have conversations. There is no way for me to currently give them my E0mail without posting it to the word, and that is why I wish for a private message section on HubPages.
There is no real incentive for HubPages to cater for members who don't write Hubs. The vast majority of the site's income comes from visitors from outside HubPages.
As Relache says, you can already send a private message to members IF they have chosen to allow that feature. Go to the person's profile, click on Fan Mail and you'll see the link to send a message in the top right hand corner of the fan mail screen.
+ 1
It's already a good service as it stands. I have had very few spammers during the last 4.5 years from providing that access to others. Personally, I believe 'new' members should be more concerned with having a realistic bio, avatar and some well written hubs on board... after all, gaining credibility would then perhaps provide a more realistic reason for others to make contact with that member wouldn't it?
I agree, it would be nice to be able to have contact without having to give out your private email. You'd either have to never respond to any emails or respond to all and hope there are no crazies out there. One crazy and all of the sudden you have to get a new email account and notify everyone in your address book. Or... you could just be really antisocial and talk to no one at all.
Personally, I would love an inbox mail system like on FB and if you're not interested, you could close down incoming from everyone or just certain users.
I s'pose, like some have said, you could have a 2nd email account just for HPs, but after a while it get's a bit convoluted and you'd have to have 2 different browsers open or just keep checking an alternate email. Ugh.
I don't see what's so complicated about associating your HP account with an email account you don't use for important or personal business.
People who email you via the contact link on your profile page can't see your email address unless you reply to their message from the receiving account. So there's not really any danger if you have it linked to an important email account. All you have to do is never reply from that account. Copy the message and always send a reply from a junk mail account.
Well, not that this is a big deal... we're just talking possibilities here so I spose we might have different wishes.
It's a personal thing. When I'm on the comp. I have FB scrabble open (Tab 1), Email (tab2) HP's (tab 3), FB non scrabble (tab 4) and then usually 2 or 3 additional tabs having to do with gathering information etc. Then at the bottom, I have word open. It's annoying to have an additional email account. I had 2 for years and I was always signing on and off of one to get to the other. Let alone the fact that my kids and I share the comp. so I have to sign off for them to sign on. It would just be nice if HPs were a little more all inclusive. I'm not saying they should have to, or that there is no other possible way, Im just saying, I personally would enjoy it.
In addition, you may reply to someone's email more than once before they turn a little spooky on ya. Sometimes they're friendly and normal at first, then by the third email, you're wondering how much you're going to regret having responded the first time.
But, I thought you were taking a leave-of-absence from HP to spend time with your kids before they all leave home.
No. It's what you posted on the Forum. You said good bye to everyone and even Robin E. wished you well on your vacation from HP.
Yeah, I read it. These were your last words:
"Anyway, I am still taking a little break, didn't mean it to be quite so dramatic. lol
I'll be around soon enough to get on your last nerve, I'm sure.
Love to you all. smile"
Maybe someone is impersonating you now.
This is why this place gets overwhelming at times.
These were my posts... put them all together and hopefully you will understand I was not making an announcement, I just had a question which was answered.

I just felt the need for a break, but after reading that help post, I would lose too much. I wish it was possible to close it temporarily, but it's not.
Ive kept my email open so I still get notifications.
I didn't mean to make such an official announcement.
I was just wondering what the options were. (I'd just really had it that day.)

I have been writing. Ive dropped by twice maybe, not that I owe anyone an explanation, but apparently you feel I do? I can't figure out if you're just incredibly literal or you're just being unkind.
Getting a little off topic , but thank you for agreeing with my point. I have personal emails for school, work, Youtube, twitter, and it would be nice to be able to just send someone a message, or vice versa and communicate with people within HubPages without have to use another site. I also always have many tabs open, and do not want to have a 5th email account open, and have to check that daily with everything else. FB has private messages, Youtube has private messages,I just think it would be useful for all people on HubPages to also be able to send a private message.
I think this would also allow you to ask a question to a specific user without posting it into the forums, onto their hub for the world to see if it was something specific, not to mention not all hubbers comment on their Hubs after they receive a comment, so I think this would be useful for that reason as well.
'Getting a little off topic'
Yeah. we should be focusing on you and your thousands of visitors.
To repeat - everyone on HubPages has the ability to send you a private message. They just have to go to your profile, click on Fan Mail, and then click on "send Johnrr631992 a message".
I agree they have made that link a little hard to find - it used to appear directly underneath your profile photo. However, if you're worried people don't know where to find it, you can include an explanation on your profile and even on your Hubs if you wish.
Do you mean that that is not your personal e mail account Marissa? When you click on "Send_____ a msg?"

What do you all think of this idea. Have an option to leave a private message to each other on our profile page. Where we have the option to accept or reject the message and also to help cut down on our private email account(s). So what do you think?

It would be delightful if there was an easier way to contact some of the Hubbers. I have not done that often, since transferring from Squidoo, however - each time I wished to, I had to remember how to do it. When I am on my profile page, and someone shows up who I am following, the message in blue...

I always appreciate it when someone lets me know about a typo or an error of fact in my hubs. I have also given a heads-up to others and they have been appreciative. When I tell someone about an error, I send them a private email. What is the proper thing to do? Ignore what looks like an...

For several months now (almost since I joined hubpages) I have been getting harassing, threatening and ridiculous comments from the same person. I originally encountered her in a forum, and she has not left me alone since. She repeatedly leaves me harassing fan mail, none of which has...

I'm reading an awful lot about Hubpages at the moment and while a lot of it is going in, not everything is and I'm certainly not very good at being able to reference back to where I read it. Frankly it's all very new!One thing which concerns me is fan mail. I've got a vague recollection of reading...

Why do people write personal fan mail notes, but yet haven't commented on an article?Am I the only one who sits in utter amazement at people who send personal fan mail notes telling you how wonderful, inspiring, creative and informative your writing is, only to find out they have NEVER even written...
