Fake traffic/referral sites

I have seen referrals from something called Trump for America and all kinds of strange cities.  What exactly is referral spam and how does it affect our page traffic?

    Thanks,

Fake spam that has been around for 12 months that targets Google Analytics. It also has some code in the spam that mocks Google.

If you're using Analytics you can use filters that bypass these results.

It can be safely ignored on hubpages.  The only thing to specifically avoid is ever going to the referring site.  They often have malware on them.

Google analytics specifics go above myhead.  Anyone have a favorite hub regarding this?  I read the one by Hubpages Help and the Google Analytics FAQ and introduction.
How will this specifically affect my analytics?  It sounds like I don't have to worry about it affecting my traffic.

There was this discussion on the same / similar topic a few weeks ago, note promisem's reply toward the bottom.  I'm not sure of any Hubs that address the topic. While I know where to do the filter, i haven't yet tried doing it myself yet but I intend to follow promisem's brief steps in his forum response.

Easy, easy fix. It's annoying too, but I was able to block it by doing the following:
