I pretty much only use Elance, and usually it goes pretty well. I get about 40% of the jobs I bid on, which works out OK for me as far as getting as much work as I want.
Lately though, I've had a rash of violation of policy requests from people posting writing projects, the most annoying and egregious being the "write me a free sample and if I like it I'll hire you" nonsense. (This even when you provide a crapload of links, references, and writing samples.) At Elance you can report this kind of thing, but usually I just send a copy of the policies for clients from the FAQ and let it go.
Do you use any of these boards? Elance, Guru, Odesk, Craig's List? Anyone use any others I don't know about?
I'm just curious who uses what and what has you experience been? Does it work out well, or usually not? Well enough to keep at it?
I've found Guru by far the best - I've just gone from being a paid member to a free basic one because I can't cope with any new work right now. I don't know about other writers but I've found that most of the clients on Guru are professional and there's some really great and interesting work that's posted up. Lots of ghostwriting work. I've never once had a problem with payment either.
I'm really new at the whole freelance thing, but have begun to explore the boards on the great list in this hub by Shirley Anderson: http://hubpages.com/hub/Places-To-Sell-Your-Writing
I've looked around on Craigslist a bit. I actually answered a weekly on-line column ad but when I was contacted by the company, it was not an outfit I'd personally want to write for. Still, though, it seemed a legitimate writing position.
Anyway, I know I'm not much help but I hope that perhaps Shirley's hubs (there's a part 2) will be. I'm so glad to be able to chat with others about their experiences in writing online!

Fellow Hub writers, I would really like your input on this topic please. I am being offered writing jobs from individuals who would like to pay a writer to write on Hubages for them. Is this a legitimate?I've gotten offers from corporations looking content writers and offers from free lance online...

Hi, Im sorry, but I am so excited. I just landed a freelance job writing for Examiner.com. Besides hubpages, this is the only one that I have been able to get paid for my writing since I came back from my sabbatical that lasted almost 4 years. I used to be a full time freelance writer until a life...

Title says it all, I got my first freelance job that I can pretty much live off of for awhile, plus my other work. I attribute a lot of it to the work I have done with Hubpages and how it made me more cognizant of marketing and SEO tech, so cheers to ya'll and thanks.

I have been browsing many of the articles rating and comparing sites like Elance and oDesk [i know they are merging], and read about many of the likes, and dislikes of each. What i'd love to find out, and share with the rest of the Hub community, is WHAT WOULD YOU IDEALLY LIKE TO SEE IN A FREELANCE...

Let me admit, i have never joined any of these two sites- Odesk and Elance. But i keep hearing that people are making some real money there and are quite happy with the way they get paid, just wanted to know from my hubber friends- is it good to join any of these or which is better?

I, personally, have two breeds that tie in my heart- the American Pit Bull Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier. Odd picks, I know, but eh I love em... Can't wait for another. I currently have 1 of each. When my APBT pup is no longer a pup, I'm split between which to bring home. I'd love to find a...
