What advice do you have for someone who wants to graduate from articles into websites?
HubPages (and Google blogspot blogger) makes it easy to post articles and add adverts, pics, newsfeeds, etc.
You will have to get REALLY comfortable with that. Then you will need to step up your knowledge to do your own blog with WordPress, then another step to do your own sites if you are going to do any customization.
You will need to learn HTML and a little PHP at least.
I disagree with the above answer you don't need to know any code they are that many free content management systems about, i recommend Joomla , they are loads of free addons and templates, you would only need to know coding if you wanted to alter anything from standard.
First i would start by finding a decent website host that is compatible with whatever platform you decide to go with.
