-Make a generalized statement about all Marines or Soldiers. What do you think all have in common in how they act or live? Do you think they are stupid or careless?

I truly salute them. For I was a poor military woman, scared as shit. I was on a naval ship and when I had to train for fire rescue, I was on the front line, that did me in. I couldn't take it, knowing I would have to go first and maybe die. I am a sad soul indeed. Or at least I use to be. We need our military, and if I were young again, maybe I would join up with the Army. But then again, I think I am needed else were in this battle of humane life.

I certainly don't think they are stupid or careless. I see them as more strict and uptight...marine's anyway. But, of course knowing you, we know that is not true big_smile

I have nothing against soldiers in the least, if that is their chosen profession then good for them.

Very commendable comment, it's true sacrifice to fight for your country, even when you disagree with the leader or policies while you are in. Thank You.

You know, I don't think you will find many people who are anti-military. You will find a lot of people against the wars going on but that does not mean they are against the people who are sent into them.

I have seen some in a thread talking about disrespecting military members for being robots. It was a while back, I don't remember the thread or hub. It simply amazes me that anyone would criticize the backbone of their defense or freedom.

Marines are like McDonalds workers. They get taught the basics of the business. The program can be applied to any idiot.

Yes they are robots. They get given an order and they have to obey.

    1. marinealways24 profile image60
marinealways24posted 15 years agoin reply to this

lol Here is the ignorance I was looking for. Do McDonalds workers risk their lives for others freedom? What is the most honerable job you have worked? Like your theory, your ignorance can be applied to any idiot. They obey all orders for the sacrifice they signed up for. The sacrifice of self for others. A sacrifice that you are apparently too ignorant and selfish to understand.

      1. marinealways24 profile image60
marinealways24posted 15 years agoin reply to this

I wanted to add to this. Like the ignorance that produced his comment, his ignorance keeps him from understanding that the military is what gives him the freedom to make his ignorant remarks. He criticizes the very backbone of his free speech. How much intelligence is this?

In his defense, Darkside is not an American with the same rights we enjoy.  He may have similar rights but they come from his own country not ours...plus you did ask for a generalized statement not a compliment.

          1. marinealways24 profile image60
marinealways24posted 15 years agoin reply to this

I did ask for a generalization, not a disrespectful ignorant remark in comparing military with a robot or mcdonalds worker. He is clearly misinformed on sacrifice. I'm sure he has military in his country. I don't think they would appreciate being called robots. All military sacrifices individual freedom, not just the US military.

Yea, I just like to keep things in perspective.  You and I are ex-military and have a different perspective than others.  Plus, sometimes we forget that even though we are typing this stuff from the safety of the US, a large part of this community is not from here.  We must always respect their culture and remember we don't always have to draw a line and dare someone to cross it because no matter how hard you try, you will never convince everyone that your way of life is better than theirs.

              1. marinealways24 profile image60
marinealways24posted 15 years agoin reply to this

I understand we all have different perspectives. I simply wanted to point out that Marines along with his military all have common ground in sacrificing self for others. I don't think someone should have to be in the military or in the US to understand this. I feel it should be common sense. I also wanted to show that most to all grouped generalizations are false. The negatives ones anyways. Thank You for adding your thoughts.

The deep end: you've gone off it.

So I'm ignorant, misinformed, selfish... did I just not make a generalization? You were after all, looking for an argument...

...and when a generalization is made you throw a little tantrum and start throwing personal insults.

Do me a favour and check out point number 10 on this page. My last position there was Quality Assurance.

If I was simply looking for arguements, why have you been the only one I disagreed with out of all the post's?

You first compare me to a mcdonalds worker and robot, then accuse me of firing the insults. Hypocritical.

Why would you make weapons and then criticize military as robots? You supported them. Were you not a robot also?

You really need to get over yourself. What do they say about being careful what you wish for because you might get it? Did you not say "I was looking for a bad generalization that I could argue."?

You were looking for a bad generalization. I gave it to you. And then you had to make a whole bunch of posts that were personal in nature.

Hypocritical on my part or idiotic on your part?

              1. marinealways24 profile image60
marinealways24posted 15 years agoin reply to this

Maybe a little of both, but I am willing to admit my faults, I believe different of you.

I try to be as humble as possible. You make a comment that I need to get over myself. lol. Again, you accuse me of firing the insults.

My remarks was only personal to that specific comment.

When comparing a military member to a robot or mcdonalds worker, what does common sense say the result will be?

If I am an idiot for asking for the bad generalizations, should they just be left uncorrected? To be left uncorrected would be idiotic in my belief.

                1. darkside profile image58

You miss the point. You are an idiot for asking for one, and then throwing a hissy fit because you got one.

I gave you one, and I already outlined how you made a personal attack, so don't cry now that a person is being insulting back.

Do I really believe what I said? No. But as far as analogies go, it does actually get off to a good start.

About 12 years ago I heard a man in a small business management course I was attending outline a similar analogy. He was talking about business systems. I've mentioned my previous experience. At the time I had a close friend in the army, a brother-inlaw in the army, to name just two, and the guy sitting next to me in the course used to be in the army. Neither I nor he got all riled up. We sat and listened.

I won't go into detail about what was explained or how it was explained, because it would, given your responses in this thread, most likely go over your head. Then again that might just be a generalization I've made about you.

lol... Marines and Soldiers are trained in leadership and discipline.  Each new administration has an agenda and sets the mission for all branches of the military.  They follow a rule of law that is set by the Uniform Code of Military Justice and swear an oath to uphold the Constitution and defend our country.  Unlike a McDonalds worker, they have a sense of honor and duty and most take great pride in what they do.  They don't only take orders the give orders.  They have many opportunities to prosper in their career and gain valuable knowledge that can transition much more effectively to the civilian world.

Robots, hardly... they make realtime life or death decisions based on their training, experience and situation.  If you think I'm wrong, go ask a Marine for a Big Mac and Fries, see what you get in return....

As the father of two members of the Military, one Army and one Air Force that have, between the two of them, served 7 combat tours of duty, the term killers is offensive.

These young men like thousands of others provide you a service you can never repay. They protect your life, your liberty, and even your right to post idiotic words.

Spout all you want, but from the first shot, fired in defense, over two hundred years ago they have protected you and your way of life. You may disagree with their use as a whole, but disagree with the civilian authority that directs them. That is completely another argument, one, at times, I might even agree with, but disrespect of the American Soldier will not be tolerated.

If you speak as an enemy and from fear, then good be afraid. Be very afraid.

Kill, yes when required, agreed. Do they not also liberate, rescue, feed, protect? A soldier by definition: is a person who serves in an Army or is engaged in military service.

They are Killers by your umm.. less than valued opinion Mr. Webster.

A very poor choice of a word as an overall portrayal of their vocation and character.

You are welcome for the lesson.

Perhaps you should apply more of your, Umm, self-evoked talents in your comments rather than require others to research and interpret your folio of manifestos to determine your meaning.

I think the biggest misconception about the military is that it is full of thoughtless drones running around with loaded guns looking for a fight.  It's just not true.  The military has counterpart for nearly every career that is in the civilian world.  As Marine stated, I was a combat medic trained to save lives and not just our own.  Yes, my first mission was always to defend my country and yes I was trained to kill but in my entire career in the Army, I never shot my weapon at a live target and I did my fair share of saving a few lives.

My husband served in the first Gulf War.  He is a wonderful man.  The Army taught him a lot.  The army helped him get his shi** together.  He was injured in the war by a land mine, but I don't think he would have traded the experience of getting to serve our country for anything.  I admire anyone who sets foot on foreign soil to risk his/her life for our country.

My husband is a Navy Corpsman working with the resevre Marines out here in Cali. He is very brave and I love him for doing what he does. Even when back when he was attatched to a ship and I had to live 6 months without him on an island far from family and friends.  He is my strength and my one true love.

Military men and women make me proud. And the arrogant jack@$$es who put them down disgusts me. I am very proud of the military and am proud to be a part of it.

Thank You for adding that. The Corpsmen in our unit worked as hard as we did. They lived in the field the same as we did. I have a lot of respect for them. They definately should get more recognition. Thanks.

I don't think there are going to be any anti-military people in HubPages. Probably best to find them in another forum or ezine. I think they (anti-military ones) need their heads examined or most likely just schizophrenics ...hmm I love the guys I write to n they feel the same for me big_smile so I have nothing bad to say about our military. Sorry.

I'm not shy to admit that I am hard on people who are openly hostile to military personnel and that's where I will stand because it does happen and has happened. Not sure how that compares to religion, but whatever floats your boat. OK. big_smile

Anyway!  Marine posted this because he's ex military and wanted to disprove any generalizations people have about soldiers...or something like that.  He's good for things like this.

Even though Misha's Post Is a bit lower I wanted to respond to you since you took up the mantle of battle with this <snipped personal attack> and to your BF... Thank him for me. My response to him is as follows:

Interestingly enough if he is off to bed, it would appear, given the time of a normal person's bed time, and the apparent time zone difference he is one of those ungrateful Europeans that have forgotten what American Blood provided for them by killing all those wonderful Nazi's that were so humane in their war fighting and extermination tactics. Do thing names of places like Omaha, Utah, Gold or Sword mean anything to you. You are beneath contempt. I usally do not respond to your ilk but your opinions disgust me and millions of other Americans. Your lack of shame has no depth.

Pretty much, to cancel out all negative generalizations to give the military the respect/honor they deserve for sacrificing personal freedom for others. Even when some they are sacrificing for are unappreciative. I would like to wake some up to understand the military they criticize is the core of why they have free speech to even write or read on hubpages.

I would like to add, I think it's perfectly alright to criticize government for their use of the military. I would be a fool to say the government never misuses the military.

I simply want to point out that when an individual enlists in the military, they sacrifice all freedom/individuality for their country/government. It is not that individuals fault if their government makes a foolish decision, the individual in the military has no choice but to follow the order. The individual sacrificed personal freedom to disagree with the government for the country and citizens. If someone wants to put blame on military for a foolish decision, the blame most often is found in the government.

    Well I don't know any!!!
We don't get out much here. I'm not that sure about my point of view in regards to sailors; but obviously in Bumble Town there is a lot of support because the song on the top of our Hit Parade is one called: "In the Navy."

As far as Soldiers goes though we do have a group here who call themselves the Bumble Town Forestry Artillery Unit. They are pretty staunch and have the latest shangis that have a range of 5 miles, depending on the weight of the pinecones used for ammo. You might have heard of them; as they were featured in an article on modern warfare in Janes weaponry in 1992.
(it's on the same page as her recipes for pickled onions).

    Glad I could Help lol

Well then...... I guess you answered your own question!
        Perhaps some servicemen should consider:
That irrepective of how primative or misunderstood another country's defenses may seem...
You can Always get your butt kicked!! Even with a Pinecone.
The Art of War has proven this throughout the centuries, has it not?
You may understand.. if you take the time to read my latest hub.
You may find many relevant points within it also.
I was not promoting the wholesale use of potatoes... being of Irish heritage... Potatoes are sacred.. lol

i always hesitate adding anything.  these get so heated with people utilizing ad hominem ad nauseum.  it seems no one debates.  they immediately use their 'pens' as swords to eviscerate without any foundation of real knowledge other than the media and casual conversation with peers to draw from.  they do not try to find out both sides them make an informed opinion.

my Marine was drafted out of high school.  he went to the University of Vietnam.  he served three tours rather than dodge the draft and abandon his country.  for that he was called a killer.  he killed but he was not a murderer nor did he ever in all the years i knew him use mind murder to win an argument.  he was fair, honest, had a high moral compass, and more honor than i've ever known in a person.  he was the kind of person others should aspire to be, like a lot of Marines and Air Force and Navy and Army i met over the years.

generalizations are dangerous.  there are good attorneys and bad ones.  good bankers and bad ones.  good doctors and ones with God complexes.  there are good soldiers and Marines and bad ones.

on the whole, our military men and women do their jobs with honor, great personal fear at times missing their families and wondering how they might die today, and yes, they follow orders.  but not all do so blindly like robots.  my husband was a Master Gunney but retired from the Corps as a Master Sargent because he showed a First Lieutenant how not to be too arrogant and almost shoot someone on the firing range.  the General was glad my husband had intervened but there had to be that reprisal.  my husband wasn't a robot.  he didn't always kill.  he rescued as well.

that's all i've got to say.  and i will hesitate to return to see how my 2 cents has been scanned and twisted to mean something else.  it saddens me to see that people are so ready to destroy something with an arrogance they shouldn't feel.  only old warriors know what really happened out there.  only their families can see the toll defending our country takes.  and until Darkside, and whomever else from this country who believes this country's military is unnecessary and nothing but a lot of mindless killing machines, can safely take their families for picnics and hikes in say the lovely hills of Afghanistan with no worries other than ants and possible rain, i guess we will be seeing them honor their convictions by moving to another country.  they should pick up a copy of "Man Without a Country" before they check out.
