Hello again everyone!  It's your friendly (if crazy) preposterous question poser here!

    Today's thought:

Why do we say things are "in an uproar," but never "in a downroar" ???  "Inquisitive minds wish to know.

Have such a query of your own?  Feel free to add to the list!

In an uproar is a climactic statement. "The crowd responded in an uproar." It describes heightened emotions and some type of physical/verbal response. On the other hand, downroar would be anticlimactic. Sort of like normal. "The crowd responded in a downroar." In other words, they got quiet. But you knew that, didn't you, you preposterous question poser?

LOL--of course I knew that...but an uproar can also be 'created,' as opposed to being a response...so perhaps a crowd ignoring a blowhard politician would be the downroar?  lol

    Why do shots "ring" out?
Why do hurricanes "barrel" into coastlines?
Why are people “strapped” for cash?
    Why are dictators "tinpot"? and,
Why does the world have Piers Morgan in it?

      We old folks know that:

Shots "ring" out because if you've ever been in the woods or at a rifle range, the sound of a small-calibre bullet has a ringing tone to it. In my neck of the woods, practically everybody my age has hunted squirrels with a .22.

Anyone who's ever witnessed a full barrel roll, knows that they are erratic and very difficult to stop. Stay out of their way if you don't want to get hurt.

Strapped" for cash? Don't know that one.

Scorn for dictators. They have tinpots on their heads because they don't deserve golden crowns.

Piers Morgan...somebody has already given a better answer to that one than I can give.

Anyway, that's the opinion of an old lady.

My mother and I often played these kinds of word puzzles.  Such as:

Ambulatory means able to walk.  But an ambulance is for a person unable to walk, ergo, it seems contradictory.

That's why I love the English language so much; you can play around with ambulance and ambulatory. DML you owe your mother a huge debt of gratitude   or is that gratuity?

Yes, I remember mother fondly every day!  One of my hubs is about some of the foolishness we used to indulge, and features on of her poems:

Why this announcement: "This  train terminates at the next station."
    The journey terminates.
It would be very unfortunate if the train terminated.

Sue, I have a similar concern about "non-stop" flights. How am I going to get off? Jump?

I also want to shake people promoting events and advertising, "advanced ticket sales such and such a date."
What is advanced about the tickets?  Are they gold-plated?

No, folks...there is no "d" on the end of the word indicating tickets sold in advance of an event!!
