I agree that identifying a well-known object or person in a photo may not be necessary, but I think the caption offers a chance to insert words that a potential reader might be searching for. It’s important not to overdo this technique, and the words must match the photo in some way, but I like our ability to add captions.
Edit: I’ve just thought of another point in favour of captions. A person or place may be well known in some countries, but not in others. Specific identification could be helpful, since our readers come from different parts of the world.
I'm not sure what an "unnecessary caption" is? Captions are necessary for the reasons that Alicia mentioned, the SEO being particularly important.

Then I have to change them back again. Grrr!If thumbnails were displayed properly, it would be fine. But they're tiny, the selected image is tiny and can't be zoomed and captions can't be viewed while viewing the image. Overall it results in a bad reader experience.

I find when I try and read a Hub from my iPhone, it won't load. I wonder if that is because the Hub is too long, or has too many photos. I give up until I can get to my computer.Seems I read (or maybe dreamed) our Hubs should be shorter to be easier to load from a mobile phone.Any...
