Hubpages News Writers Creating Articles on Yahoo Life

I noticed a huge increase in traffic to one article (560 per day instead of the normal zero or one view per day) and it turned out that there was a backlink to it on an article written on Yahoo Life by one of the people who write the news articles on Hubpages network sites. Several other articles on Dengarden other than mine were linked to also.  I haven't checked whether there are any other articles written by the news writers.
Can anyone contribute to this site? The Yahoo Contributor Network was closed down in 2014, but maybe this writer has contacts with Yahoo or was a journalist there or a freelancer and can write stories. (I could just check her Linkedin profile)

Eugene, that's excellent news. How do you figure out your backlinks?

Just check this secondary dimension in GA after you select a page from the list. I don't know how we're going to do all this when they do away with Universal Analytics. The new GA4 stats have a terrible user interface. I can't find out to check any of the stats I normally examine.

Gosh, y'all, all that stuff looks complicated. I'm a writer, not a techie. I'm glad I don't have to depend on this kind of tracking to make a living. But I'm glad that my fellow writers are doing well.

Oh boy, I still can't get G4 to switch over and Matt didn't know what to do.

Was the article published on Yahoo or just published on Dengarden and then linked to their homepage? I had a thousands of visits last week to a very obscure article thanks to a link, and when I seached back found it on the Yahoo home page in a PH news article.

Actually examining it more closely, it's a news article from Dengarden picked up by Yahoo Life and republished. There's also a couple of articles from the Chicago Tribune published underneath it. I've seen this happen a couple of times too on Google News I think where network site news articles were republished.

Edit: Yes, just found the article on Dengarden.

I've certainly had links from MSN and Google News that have brought a lot of views but I'm struggling to recall if there were any Yahoo. The influx of views tends to only last for a limited period but it's better than nothing.

As the search engine traffic has dwindled, the traffic from other sites has become more important and noticeable.

The Yahoo link did a lot better than MSN. As you pointed out, however, it is only for a few days. The page rank on Google or even Yahoo did not change despite all of those views.

I may be remembering it wrong but I think my all-time record was an MSN link. It peaked at 17,000 views in a single day. It was a short-lived boost but dramatic.

I do have one hub that was getting sustained traffic from Newsbreak. It was like 40 or 50 per day but noticeable because it hasn't faded.

Generally speaking though, I'm getting very little traffic from news sites nowadays.

Yes, I had one of those boosts one day and thought it was a glitch in the HP matrix until I found the source!!! It seems like those Newsbreak app links seem to have a little more effect on page rank after they start drawing traffic. (I am not sure of that because maybe they pick articles that are going to do well based on SEO.)

These things are a flash in the pan and they tease you into thinking your world is about to change. The let down comes the following day but, as Paul notes, it's better than nothing. And, nothing is what we get most of the time.

Yes, sustained search engine traffic or Amazon sales are the only way to make any meaningful money here and I've not been getting much of either of those recently.

How do Yahoo publish these articles without there being a duplication issue? I see articles from newspapers and magazines such as Cosmopolitan. Are they doing something similar to framing? I Googled this and apparently there's a thing called press release distribution where you pay to have an article on the site. It's not just Yahoo, it's other sites too. Since the articles on the network sites are called "news" they can be submitted as news press releases to Yahoo, Google News, MSN and others. So maybe that's what Hubpages is doing.

Earnings have doubled over the weekend, so that was nice. I've seen a figure of over $400 mentioned as a fee for these press releases.

Hey, so my understanding is that these "news" articles are published via the niche sites and are then carried over to curation pages hosted by platforms like Yahoo Life, MSN, etc.

Usually when something is published on Yahoo Life, there will be a note that it was originally published elsewhere (like Dengarden).

I would assume the duplication issues aren't actually an issue because these are flash news stories vs. evergreen. These flash news stories don't need to pass quality control for SERPs because they aren't necessarily going to be searched. They exist to potentially go viral for a limited amount of time and to drive temporary but inflated traffic.
