Close to first payout - earnings slow down?

I'm so close to a payout, finally - after almost 2 years.  I realize I haven't had one sooner becuz I haven't done all of the things that earn us money here on HP.  I started out not caring if I made money, I was writing for fun.  But now that I'm so close I find myself checking in every day.  What I see is that suddenly with only about 5 dollars to go - I am not making more than a penney a day!  Maybe it was always this way, I just wasn't looking.

But has anyone else had this experience, so close - and then the slow down?

I identify with you. In January of this year, I saw my AdSense earnings really gaining speed, after having been here for two years, and I vowed to write 100 Hubs a year going forward. Then Panda hit at the end of Feb. Knocked the wind out of my sails!

It's discouraging now, whereas in January it was very, very hopeful. I have no advice about HP. I'd like to see them come back to the point where it's up, up, and away for those of us who like to write here. I guess we'll see.

It really hurts to be so close and yet so far away. (I feel a sad song coming on...)

      So far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn't help to know you're just time away

Long ago I reached for you and there you stood
Holding you again could only do me good
Oh, how I wish I could
      But you're so far away

One more song about moving along the highway
Can't say much of anything that's new
If I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it being close to you

      But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn't help to know you're so far away

Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothing else to do but close my mind
I sure hope the road don't come to own me
There's so many dreams I've yet to find

      But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn't help to know you're so far away

I wouldn't worry too much about it Mega, as that happened to me too for my first pay out. I started off slow, but then the adsense started to add up quickly once I found a fan base.   Unfortunately, my earnings slowed down drastically when I got around the 85 dollar mark, so i was stuck in limbo for a few more months until it finally hit over a 115 to get my first pay out.  lol.

Of course, with all the stuff happening with hubpages, and panda, my earning have definitely slowed down quite a bit.  however, i think im starting to figure out ways around it though.  anyways, i hope your first pay out happens for you soon, and congratulations when it does happen. smile

When did you sign up to Adsense Steve? I remember you saying once that you hadn't signed up but wanted to. I bet you do well since you cover current trends in movies people search for smile

I think I signed on with adsense around my fourth or fifth month that i was here.  I would've done it sooner, but I forgot to, as I was more concerned about transferring old blogs that I wrote on myspace to hubpages at the time.  Not a smart idea, as I probably should have set up adsense first.  lol  Oh well, what can you do?

As far as how well I do, I think I do a lot better than most people that write predominantly movie reviews here, but I wouldn't say that I'm doing extremely well though, as I haven't even reached my second payout yet.  I should've hit it about a few months ago, but the panda thing caused it to where I wasn't making anything from adsense for the longest time.  Now, it's barely starting to earn back money again.  I know, kind of sad huh?  However, it's not a big deal to me, as it's a good thing I don't rely on adsense to make a living like others do.  otherwise, i'd probably be in a lot of trouble right now.

thank you all for your helpful words!  I had a feeling I was not the only one who experiences this slowdown - and my starting score on my latest hub was a bit lower than usual (maybe becuz its been so long) I hope it doesn't reflect on my writing.  I really don't know how to do this very well - and for awhile I haven't been enjoying it as much with so many HP buddies leaving and all - but I'm still here, still trying, glad to see you all still here and plugging away too

I missed my first adsense payout by 2p (about 3 cents) but it happenned the next month- all good things come to those who wait.. and wait...and wait...

The slowdown is probably due to the impact of Panda, it's just a coincidence that you're close to payout.

Do remember that if your goal is to make money, you should simply ignore Hubber Score and HubScores - they're not relevant.

Have you signed up for the HP Ads program?  If not, sign up as soon as you hit your Adsense payout figure.

HP Ads is getting mixed reviews - I think you're right, after I get my payout from Adsense I'll try it.

yep, the payout is going to take awhile - views have slowed, clicks have slowed, glad I don't depend on any $ here.  Thing is, I know its probably my own fault for playing around in the forums instead of creating more highly visible hubs - its just that the inspiration has not been forthcoming lately and I've been lazy and preoccupied.  Will try harder.  It would be fun to have a payout before I completely lose interest  lol

I noticed that I earn nothing, zero, most of the days. Last month I earned only $1.45 depressing!! Ok, I'm not complaining and I am trying to send backlinks, bookmarking sites and so on. I know it takes time, I am patient. I wonder if I need to switch off the panda program but with this at least I am earning something everyday. Anyway I notice that most of the time goggle adsense doesn't put ads related to my hubs topics.Yesterday I created an hub on panic attacks and I have few ads on it about advertising on Google. This is quite disappointing!!

mega1posted 12 years agoin reply to this

I often don't make a cent - the only reason I make anything is becuz I have a couple hubs that lucked out and get lots of views.  I guess one has to find the right topic and then write it so people like it and share it and come back.  But I think its the topic that makes or breaks it.  I have lots of hubs that get a view every couple months!  so do not despair - you can do it!  It took me 2 years, afterall!

Hey - you ought to know that when you first publish something the adverts are going to be far less likely to match content than they will after the "web spiders" have crawled the content.

Also, you can NOT discern advert/content matching ratios from viewing your hubs correctly.  What you see logged in to your HP account is going to be different than what someone who views from a search engine result page sees.

update - even closer - inch by penny inch I will get there!  It is exciting and I'll be so proud!  At last my writing will have paid - and without too much effort.  I really admire all you writers who pursue freelancing - I know it takes a lot of work and focus!

Hi - just updating - yes!  I am there!  yesterday I topped the payout and so that means I'll get a check in time to take on vacation (my son's wedding)  whoopeeeeee!  I'm overwhelmed.  so you see it doesn't take all that much to make me happy.  I hope that it all works out right and there's no delay (keeping fingers crossed)

Yes its not like the good old days anymore, I still earn enough at Hubpages every month to reach payout but I don't think Adsense is paying as much per ad..but I also work on other peoples websites and get $90 per site at the moment.

congrats richie!  I hope that's working out really good for you.  Wish I had the expertise, but I don't and I'm lazy and so that's why it takes me so long to make money.  I should hire you.  Maybe I will after I get another payout!  But I know it won't do any good until a write some more sure-fire winner hubs that people will search for!

I've only just started writing again after about a month and a half's rest, I did web designing in that time instead. Some of my earlier hubs were all about getting traffic while others were serious writing and I'd spend a few hours planning them..might as well keep them all if Hubpages is OK with them smile

When I was close to making my first adsense check I looked at earnings several times a day.  One day I'd make $7.00, and then make absolutely nothing for five or six days.  Then all of a sudden I'd hit a $14.00 day. . . .and I've never come close to that amount in a day since then.

I am so jealous. $7 in a day?
I seem to get stuck earning pennies. I know I've only been writing for three months, but don't even  have $5 so far. At this rate, I might make $10 for Christmas.  I am not a great computer person, more of a writer, so I am sure there are things I'm missing, but I'd love any help anyone might offer.

Less than $5 in three months is pretty normal.

You don't make money from visits by other Hubbers.  It's visitors who arrive via the search engines who click on ads.  It takes a few months for your Hubs to rank well enough in the search engines to attract a decent audience.

Most of the hubs I write aren't going to get ads clicked. This makes me prefer  HP ads.  It's more regular, even if not much. And it's the regularity that I like. And I might be wrong, but I seem to rermember that HP pays out at $50, but Adsense pays out at $100.

Yes, you are quite right, so it is half the wait for HP to pay out. It took me a year to get paid by Adsense and then came the Panda- but HP is nearly there- so looking forward to that probably next month
